Hello, everyone! With the enemy contest coming to a close, I've come to announce the winners to the public! The Discord already knows, but we won't leave you out here hanging!
There have been some rules changed in the contest for the better of our competitors. Why? We didn't expect so many submissions at first, and loved so many of the submissions! The original number prior to the announcement was 5 instead of 3. We brought the number back up to 5, but with a catch. The 2 new slots would only work under certain conditions. 1 slot will be a mini-boss and the next a one-time encounter.
With this in mind, let's have a look at who won!
All art done by the competitors picked fresh from their submissions. All art will be translated or redrawn into the game as new, polished sprites with various animations to make them all as alive as the currently-existing monsters.
Mini-Boss Winner:
Scareglow by Szkraft220
Why:
Everyone unanimously thought the concept and design of the creature were outstanding. I personally imagined Louis wandering around a pre-established part of the bogs and this creepy thing just stalking him before, like a tornado, whirling out of hiding and viscously attacking him we all agreed the monster should be a mini-boss. :^)
Single Encounter Winner:
Mornietta by Exactly
Why:
Mornietta was pretty standard submission at first, before Exactly updated the submission. When updated, we got to see the kickass magic arms she sports now, and immediately that caught our eye. She was my first vote to be the mini-boss, though others believed Scareglow was better suited for that position. Considering Mornietta's distinctly humanoid design, we thought it would be strange for there to be many, and we made her a unique monster for that reason.
The following characters are numbered for convenience, not ranked.
Common Encounter Winner 1:
Foxfire by LeopardBunny
Why:
Honestly, this creature was just precious. What sold it for me was the mushroom underside of its head, which was demonstrated by the sketch of it laying down. While it's not genuinely scary, we did say "wholesome spooky" was an option for monster designs, and this one embodies that most out of all of them. It was also interesting how the name correlated with a real-life type of fungus, the foxfire mushroom.
Common Encounter Winner 2:
C o r r u p t ' s monster, which came without a name. He's given us permission to name it ourselves, which we'll get to later.
Why:
The idea of a chunk of ground shooting up in front of an already exhausted and afraid Louis was incredible in the team's opinion. It looked like so much fun to work with!
Common Encounter Winner 3:
Woesetta by R2d2kx100
Why:
The team really liked this one all around, as it was a simple but interesting design. The small amount of lore R2d2kx100 put into the creature, too, was probably what made it most interesting. We've honestly considered tying lore together between Woesetta and Exactly's Mornietta due to their similar features and names, which both creators allowed.
Lastly, here are some honorable mentions:
Fart by Exactly
Bubblgheist by Skeng
Ego-Emi by Unibrine
Finally, that's all out of the way. I'm so proud of this community for all the creative ideas they brought forth, and I thank you so much for the love and support we've been getting over the year Undertale: The Otherground has been around. Sure, most of the fans are from the Demolitale era of this game's development, but I still can't appreciate it enough.
Again, I'm honored to have had such a fun competition, and I have nobody but you, the community, to thank for that. If you lost the competition, please don't feel sad. After all, this is the Bulwark Bog competition, not a generic competition. You may just win another potential competition down the road!
That's all for now. Thank you for following the development of Undertale: The Otherground, and I'll be seeing you all next log!
