Hello, everyone! Co-Director, Producer and Lead Writer here!
As some of you may know, I am currently on a roll over posting story guides for several games which i've written scripts and stories for, and this game is no exception. This week, the final draft of the storyline of Matthew's was submitted and approved, so I felt as if writing this post were something of a necessity.
Given how little you guys actually know about the game's plot (aside from the plot synopsis), I felt as if this post were necessary for speculation on what the game could entail could properly begin and just so you guys have a better idea on what's to come ;)!
WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?
"Of course life has no point. If it had, man would not be free." ~ Andrei Tarkovsky
In the wake of the mysterious vanishing of the Security Guard at Matthew's Palace, the renowned theater faces a compelled closure in order to unravel the truth behind this enigma. Angel, a rookie police detective is dispatched to Matthew's Palace with the sole mission of uncovering the secrets surrounding this perplexing disappearance.
With just one night at his disposal, Angel must utilize his skills to unearth any clues that may lead to the whereabouts of the missing Security Guard. However, an eerie and malevolent force, taking the form of the iconic characters from Matthew's Palace, emerges with a singular objective: to subject Angel to torment. It possesses knowledge of your actions, Angel, and will stop at nothing to make you suffer.

The story of Matthew's is based off the works of Stanley Kubrick, Hideo Kojima and H.P Lovecraft, aiming to tell an existential and almost Lovecraftian cosmic horror. We do not aim to tackle the typical supernatural ghost story that has been done to death in the FNaF community, as we instead much rather go over the existential cosmic horror of humanity's purpose and role in all of existence.
Hideo Kojima served as massive inspirations for the type of story we're pursuing with Matthew's. Its not a story that the average player will understand in one go - it'll have to be analyzed, dissected, properly explored to understand just how deep this odyssey of horror goes. I could consider it the most existentially horrific fangame due to the implications and arguments it presents to the argument regarding our purpose as humans.
Though it doesn't deal with the occult, the supernatural entity controlling the vessel behind Matthew's can certainly be described as eldritch in nature. You will never get a clear answer on what it is, but there are enough hints for you, the audience, to come to a conclusion.

The story of Matthew's revolves around detective Angel Bates investigating the vanishing of a security guard over at Matthew's Palace, called Elias Harker. Both of these characters have very intriguing stories and personal conflicts which we dive into in depth in the game.
For one, Angel is a man who is driven by the existential conflict of what makes a human important in the grand equation of reality. It is well known that humanity is but a mere atom compared to the grand universe, but his journey really delves into the existential crisis of being something so small to the point where you don't even know if you are significant to the grand scheme of things. It really dives into the existential horrors of your purpose in the world, and the answer to Angel's journey is one which will for sure spark debates, and nothing is ever truly answered.
On the other hand, Angel begins finding videos (filmed in a similar style to the "Marble Hornets" tapes), which archive Elias Harker's last days before vanishing. It really dives deep into the psychological torment behind the mysterious happenings in Matthew's Palace, showing us that, unlike most fangames, the horrors aren't just in the building, but in our own homes.
In Matthew's, you're never really safe. Not even you, the player.
CONCLUSION

@RexozArts and I are more than proud that our creation is starting to take shape, with the past few weeks being some of the most productive that development has seen. If I were to estimate, i'd say the game is very likely to release in mid-2026, though we'd have to wait and see. Either way, this shows just how insanely talented our team is, and I cannot be more proud of everyone.
I hope you're all as excited about Matthew's as we are to release the game. It genuinely is going to be something interesting and special in the fangame scene, covering new ground and new horror genres whilst also delving into new and groundbreaking ideas that many have been afraid to tackle in the past.
Thank You all for reading. We hope you're more excited than before after reading!! ;)
and remember...You're never truly safe, dear player.
With love,
