Alright, so I guess I’ll start posting on this blog more for myself than anyone else. I want to catergorize my feelings as I dive into game development.
My first engine that I’ll be using will be Unity. I’ve spent several hours watching the tutorials, but unfortunately, the system I have to use (as I never get any time to develop at home on my PC) has a terrible graphics card.
The more I actually play with the engine alongside of the tutorials, the more I realize just how easy it is to fuck up everything with just a couple of clicks. I pity the fool that messes with another Dev’s computer while they aren’t looking as a joke. Fingers would be broken.
What aggravates me more than anything is my inablity to make assets for my games. I’ve been using PiskelApp.com for my sprites as I wanted to start as simple as possible. Even the most basic things though look terrible. I’ll know more how I feel about them after they’re in motion, but things like scale in relation the screen seem to be impossible to judge while just making the assets.
Anyways, these are my laments on Unity so far. Once I get used to it, I think it will be the perfect tool for my games, but that initial learning is hard.
From here I’ll list off a few projects I want to make and the engines they’ll be in.
Diving - a scrolling shooter in which the player is a Deep Sea Diver. The screen will fill with all sorts of oceanic enemies and I also want to include some huge bosses like Dagon or a Kraken. The goal will be the depth reached, so it will be competitive with friends. The goal here is the most simplistic game I can think of.
Game School - Terrible title at the moment, but I actually have a degree in English and what better way to flex those muscles than with a text only game. Thus I want to make a visual novel about a college community that actually celebrates game design above all else. Imagine massive libraries filled with games and history about designers and pivotal games in history.
Ben Crawford - My second way to use my English skills is in my favorite type of game, the RPG. I lucked into getting the RPG Maker Humble Bundle. Its really simple to use, but I don’t think I could ever release something without changing the assets into something unique. So, I’ll be building a prototype and adding assets later, since there are so many I can pull from the engine itself.
If you’ve read this much of my blog, congrats! Thanks, I guess, for reading my thoughts. You sure are neato.
Oh, and these posts will increase in quality later. I actually write smart things over at GigaGeekMagazine.com, but for now this will suffice. I’ll be sure to bring up some of my design thoughts later on.
