You probably remember how we talked about Saul, the lighthouse keeper, in one of our previous updates and how he used to drink at some port tavern. Well, let’s take a look at that mysterious place.

Located in the poor quarter there’s an establishment that many visit, though not everybody who goes there will admit it. Not all that happens there is entirely legal. Why hasn’t the police department done anything about it? Well, some agents are quite fond of this place, even those leading the force (cough) August Thompson (cough).

Once inside, visitors are welcomed by an eclectic combination of furniture and decorations: Arabic carpets, Chinese lanterns and even small trinkets from America. Some customers wait their turn at the bar, others sit and enjoy the show under the light of the lanterns. There’s a piano and a humble stage that entertain everybody as they get another drink.

Needless to say, alcohol and performances aren’t illegal in this city. That’s kept on the second floor. Not that anybody would bother if it was downstairs, but people here like to pretend this is a civilized neighborhood.

As you climb the stairs you realize the whole building is actually filled with smoke, but it’s much denser in here. The shiny colorful lights are gone now and only a few candles allow you to see. You hear people coughing and see a few beds. One doesn’t need to be a detective to realize that this is an opium den, which isn’t quite legal in this country.

You see some poor souls smoking, lying around and even crawling. Their eyes appear to be empty. It’d be easy to judge them when you have a nice house and money to do what you want. But life is quite hard when you work at the factory all day and barely manage to survive. Some people need a way out and this was the only one they could find.

Even with the dim light and the smoke you can see some more people going around and a couple of doors that remain shut. Looks like this building is still saving a couple of secrets of its own.
