First Game Jolt Devlog and Open Alpha Patch Notes 0.19603: Propagating Fire and Freezing Lakes!


Hey everyone,

I have been writing the bi-weekly devlog for BattleJuice Alchemist for a long time and now decided to bring it to Game Jolt! Everything I talk about today can be explored by all you fine people right away in the open alpha playtest on Steam.

Those of you following along might know that I have been implementing environmental effects lately.

The first one allows you to freeze rivers and lakes, now you can light things on fire. This one turned out really cool in my opinion, because so many systems interact here: Fire has a chance to propagate, which is connected to the weather system. It is less likely for fire to spread if it is raining.

Trees burn down bit by bit. The first time you set them on fire their leaves burn away, then the upper part and so on until only the roots are left. Everytime a part burns, ash and wood materials spawn.

The spiky circles as seen in the image above indicate where fire causes damage to you and enemies. So you can utilize burning objects by kiting enemies into them.

The game world feels so much more alive now that the environmental effects are getting done one by one and I can't wait to continue working on the "arcane" environmental effect.

We're currently building new story locations for BattleJuice Alchemist, namely a city called The Well. Check out this piece of concept art by our art director Felix!

Here comes more concept art for The Well, the new town we are currently implementing in BattleJuice Alchemist. These are two more tiles of the city, namely the makeshift camp of our protagonist, Juice, and the shop of Stan, the local merchant.

Mae Borowski is the main character of Night in the Woods! It's an adventure game that tells the story of her return to her hometown of Possum Springs. She was confirmed as canonically pan in a social media post by the game's creator Scott Benson.
