Flatlander 0.5: The levelling.

So finally I have released version 0.5
Based on previous versions of the game one might expect one more level, one more mechanic, nothing more.

Not this time!

Here we have not one, but two new levels! The first, level 9, is simple. It is merely the calm before the storm. I had initially designed it to be level 8, but gave up on that. Now I use it to teach an important fact: Doors can be activated by more than one box pad, more specifically, needing two at once.

Level 10 is a big level. One massive headache for me to design, and a challenge for you to play! Here is a level that takes every concept in the past, and uses them. One thing I have to preface this level with: Due to its sheer complexity, not every pad will be connected to its corresponding doors. It would simply be too confusing, especially due to the design. I hope you'll manage to get through regardless. One tip: States change over time.

Level 10 is also significant as it features a different method for coding, and as such plays slightly different. There is a small forced delay for switching between layers to stop you from going from the top layer to the bottom layer instantaneously. Also the switching animation is used far more sparingly, and switching is as a whole, a smoother experience. The level also only needs to load once, so you don't get a few frames of the default look before all the states load in. On top of this I managed to more properly lock the player into the view boundaries, which is a change that has occurred for every level.

Coding things afresh and keeping them compatible with the old style has been a unique experience, but one I've ultimately enjoyed and learned from. I look forward to making more levels in the future.

Speaking of the future! Here are a list of plans or ideas for the next few updates:

  • More levels! Duh!

  • A patrolling hazard

  • A side scrolling level

  • A new kind of box, most likely to be a 3 dimensional box.

  • The introduction of new assets, and animations (this is for when I get bored coding levels :P)
