EDIT: Looks like this wasn't posted the way I wanted to...so here is the gamepage for Greenlit: https://gamejolt.com/games/fnasgreenlit/510808
Happy 4th anniversary to the Greenlit AU!...and in celebration is a new devlog! This time, I'll recap my game development shenanigans, briefly talk about how far Greenlit has come, and make the game's crew feel more complete. Without further ado, it's time for the moment you've all been waiting for...and then some!
Design Reveal: Clone Knuckles & Clone Luigi
At long last, it's time for the two new (as in not from the original FNaS) characters to shine! Clone Knuckles here was always meant to be an extension to Clone Tails' concept. Naturally, that means I sought to have his design appear similar to Clone Tails' while also giving the feeling of a "leader". The final design I ended up with kept a handful of ideas I had in mind for years but executed much better than prior designs, namely the scar, marking, and accessories. His pants were tough to get right, but making them consistent with Clone Tails' pattern-wise did the trick. Overall, I think I was able to make a cool design with Clone Knuckles! As a reminder, he is the final enemy character you're deal with...besides you-know-who.
Last but not least...in terms of characters I intend to show the designs of...is Clone Luigi! Unlike the rest of the cast, this clone completely lacks the unusual, nocturnal behavior and will help you when you're not doing the night shift. He is probably the easiest character to design, as all I needed as reference was Luigi himself and Clone Mario's design for Greenlit. Clone Luigi is similar to his brother's design, but there are a handful of differences to make him distinct. He's got a short top hat, a tie, and different color placement of clothing. You'll be able to make an unlikely alliance with him in the game, and I hope you'll come to enjoy the independent clone through that!
When the Greenlit AU first began in 2020, I felt the roster that would start it all should have more than the OG 4 clones and Golden Sonic. This is what led to the creation of Clone Knuckles and Clone Luigi, who I felt were the most natural choices. They both form a proper trio of Sonic and Mario representatives respectively. It feels so satisfying to finally have the Greenlit cast established with full designs...but that's merely most of them, for there's only a single character left to design.
Game Development Recap
This will be a "tell, don't show" moment as I've been prioritizing on getting the remaining character designs in, but there's some of things I'd like to go over:
Remember when I added the flashlight mechanic to help the office? Well, the way I planned out the computer's camera system felt a bit shallow, so I have decided to have it receive a flash mechanic of its own! You'll be able to perform a quick flash on a particular camera you're on, but it will come at the cost of some short cooldown that applies to all of the cameras. It prevents abuse of the mechanic and encourages fast consideration. Of course, its effects will vary on the characters you face.
While I'm not at the phase of coding full-time, I've crafted a blueprint revamping how I approach having characters show up on the cameras. Each character has their own sprite that will show or not show depending on current character position and current camera. It should eliminate the hassle of my initial approach, which was to make a ton of images that were just "background with character(s) put in". This would not have come to mind if it weren't for Five Nights at Fredbear's, a classic Scratch FNaF fangame that had the same idea.
Greenlit's post-night sections will be cutscenes driving the story forward. Consider them breathers if you will! These sections will be saved for when the gameplay itself is good to go for some time. I may go in-depth on the specifics and why in the next devlog... (if I remember that is)
Despite making a good deal of progress, the game's development will most likely have to be put on pause for around a month or two. Similar to last year, I shall prioritize on finishing my (second) year in college strong...but something is different this time. I will not go in-depth for the sake of privacy, but I am pushing myself to improve how I'm living and stop taking things for granted. Taking the steps necessary will not be an easy task, but I am certain it will help with everything I do, including the development of Greenlit. As the AU grows, so must I.
Also, there won't be an April Fools project this year...but there IS something else that will happen. One of my classes for the spring semester presented me with a perfect opportunity through a major assignment. I intend to share what I make out of this opportunity to the public when it's finished! All I will say is that it has NOTHING to do with Greenlit and will serve as a "pilot" of sorts to an original concept I've had cooking up in my mind for years. Stay patient and stay tuned!
4 years of Greenlit!
It's crazy to think of how far the Greenlit AU has come, especially in uncertain times. While not the first FNaS AU made by a fan, it is the first truly popular AU and has left a positive impact on FNaS! I'm happy of the creative evolution I've sparked and it pleases me to see the many ways people reimagine FNaS to their own liking.
In addition, last month marked the 9th anniversary of FNaS itself...and one year since Greenlit began development as a game! Games take time to work on to completion, and I hope people understand that well, despite the radio silence I keep leaving my own game with. Pretty funny to know FNaS is quite the old fangame though...
Let's move onward with another year of Greenlit!
...and that's all! Now there's only one character left to design: Golden Sonic. Unlike the rest of the cast, I do not intend to reveal his design, and will let his own reveal come naturally when the game releases. However, I may shift priorities to full-time coding the moment develop resumes after college is over. That means from this point onward, devlogs will shift away from revealing character designs and focus more on other aspects of Greenlit and its ongoing game development. Thank you all for the support across these 4 years and see you next post!
