At some point I got in the habit of coming up with new outfits for BB every game - to be honest partly as a way of avoiding getting bored by always having to move around the same character sprite during testing. As someone with no real interest in clothes it's been sort of interesting to figure out from scratch what kind of combinations worked and what ones didn't...
In the doodle above, the two top-left pictures were the original outfits you were going to choose between.. I looked up old Nancy Drew type covers and romance comics to try to figure out outfits that would have kind of a midcentury romantic heroine vibe, stylish and a bit weirdly old fashioned at the same time. I think I changed up the palette in part because BB's red sweater reminded me too much of Mr Rogers.
Another inspiration for the game was the kind of gothic fiction where the cover always seems to involve a woman in a nightgown running away from a house. One of the early ideas was that BB had won some kind of raffle that entitled her to a stay in a kind of gothic novel fantasy camp complete with weird masked figures roaming in the night etc.. I decided against it in part bc there'd already been a joke about that stuff being ZZ's fantasy in Ears Of The Killer. To distinguish the sisters I tried giving this setting more of a 60s pop art feel instead, and in the process BB's nightwear turned into regular pajamas.
Finally I thought the jacket ones were cute but too formal for the setting, although they were eventually reused in the super-preppy and pink Hallmark movie section look. The one in the black jacket looks like she's about to join the Sharks. Well, thank you for reading my dissertation "how many outfits can you put on a character who's basically two triangles."
