I started building levels only 6 days ago (sic!), and it actually seems like a month ago.
At first, I tested mechanics in this level (you probably seen it in previous videos):
But then I decided that having basic movement + wall climbing/wall running is more than enough to start building first part of the game, that will feature mostly platformer elements. I thought that if I dived deeper and continued realizing all of the systems and mechanics I had in mind, I won’t come to creating the actual game in thousand years and will only get bored with this project, so here I am.
At first, I quickly set up global lighting/effects in the level to make it give me a vibe I wanted from this section of the game. Then I tried blocking it out, constantly playing through it to see if it’s easy/hard enough and if it’s at least “okay” to play.
It is supposed to be if not first, then one of the first levels, where player should familiarize themselves with controls and how they feel in my game, so the level doesn’t feature any advanced mechanics, but instead, is purely focused on simple jumping between platforms and over some obstacles.
After the blockout was complete and I was satisfied with the result, I suddenly decided to try and swap blocks with actual models. The first thing that came to mind was Infinity Blades asset pack. Yeah, I can’t afford custom models, so I decided to do the best I can with the free ones. Here’s how the levels looks right now:
It still is not finished - there are plenty of blocks left, and also the placed assets need polishing and adding more detail is crucial. But as of right now the level is actually pretty fun to play - me and my friend spent a couple of hours playtesting it, and what I can say is that it was real fun trying to beat each other’s speed record in turns.
