I figured out how to make music work in a Pokemon style overworld in RPG Maker using events.

There are two types of events used. Two are placed at each ends of the route with a town at either end. This event is set to player touch and a conditional branch is used to flip flop a variable.

This variable correlates with a Parallel Event which contains a tree of conditional branches that assign a song to a particle number within a variable.
