REVIEW:
A procedural generated maze with monsters lurking around every other corner doesn't seem like the most "original" horror game (at least by today's standards), but that doesn't mean the game is bad. In fact, quite the opposite is true.
I feel this game could actually be the standard for those thousands of other "procedural-generated" horror games that try and mimic the recipe. This game is really well done, and it was enjoyable to play.
Pros:
atmosphere (I never felt safe, this is actually one of two games I've played, where I seriously thought about quitting because I was too nervous to go on [what a wuss, I know])
story (I never finished, but I can tell that the dev(s) had at least outlined the general premise; unlike 99% of other indie games I've found)
confusion (you will forget how to get back home, guaranteed)
Mehs:
procedural generated world (it's done really well, but isn't perfect, sometimes there is nowhere to go except to your death)
difficulty (I was not able to finish, and it seems that some other players were not able to either. This could be a plus to some and a negative to others)
Cons:
monster design (if the atmosphere had not been as good as it was, the monster design would have ruined it for me. It was unique, but not at all scary.
animations (specifically the death animations were anti-climatic and were kind of a let down; they felt "sloppy" as opposed to the rest of the game [the other animations were fine though])
All-in-all Vanish is an awesome game, and I would encourage anyone and everyone to give it a shot (unless you're too scared, in which case you should CLICK HERE for a game more age appropriate for you).
