Not to be a humbug, but most Christmas songs are just festive lalala. They're kinda fun, or very catchy at best. That's... it's ok.
But "Merry Little Christmas" has a layer of implied tragedy within it. "From now on our troubles will be far away" means there's troubles to be far away from. It's a song of comfort in a time when it's sorely needed.
The specific Christmas day is based around the Winter Solstice, quite literally the darkest time of the year, and it's in the midst of this so called darkest day that we celebrate hope and compassion, two of humanities greatest qualities.
Quite literally, a light in the darkness.
And I don't mean this exclusively in the religious sense (I'm not anymore) but in the much broader sense of the human experience.
I've always loved stories that aren't afraid to show us just how cruel this world can be, without holding back. But even in the midst of the greatest cruelty, do not tell me there is nothing to value.
This world may be cruel, but in spite, and at times maybe even because of it, it remains so beautiful too.
Struggle and contrast to me, are very special. A light in the darkness is more striking an image than a well lit room. And I think that's part of why I love those kinds of vibes in stories, and of course, songs.
Not too long from now, I'm planning to release something for the Joltiday celebration. It's fun, and weird, and mocks Christmas commercialism, and has all sorts of spooky vibes! I think Christmas and Halloween are tied for my favorite holidays. I think Halloween much for the same reasons I have just described, it's an opportunity to explore the disturbing together, and make it all just a little less scary.
Or perhaps, to become more accepting of the fact that sometimes we are scared, and that's ok.
But besides the fact that these words just got stuck in my head this morning, I wanted to share some things I genuinely love about Christmas.
So, whatever you do or don't celebrate, I hope you have a merry little Christmas day. Even if it's just a particularly pleasant Wednesday for you. <3
(also if there are any other holidays you celebrate obviously I hope those go well for you too🤞)
Catch ya soon! ^.^
