im autism, so i just wanna say: the new mario movies are just packed with filler. even if you ignore the fan appeal with the amount of references, the plot is just excuses to get to the references and its not very coherent, even if its more original than other mario games stories. like, the simplicity of the story works well when its for a game, but it just feels like theyre stretching for content with the 23 mario. even though i dont find it a fantastic movie, 93 mario at least was much more interesting, despite being an awful adaptation. i feel like if 93 mario had the sequel they were planning, it would've been one of the best mario movies, cuz it wouldve been a good adaptation with the same energy as the 93 film.

when i watch the 23 movie, i just get reminded nonstop that i could be watching the Super Mario Bros Super Show instead and i would be much more interested and more entertained. I don't think that way for the 93 movie, because it has its own identity. i mentioned how they couldve made super show references at some points in the 93 movie, but i actually dont mind that they didnt, since the movie is trying to be its own thing and i appreciate that.

on a similar note, the 23 movie was meant to be representative of modern mario, but it really fails in that regard. It tries to be its own thing with its plot, but it just doesnt fit with the mario references, then. Like, the unorthodox plot worked with the 93 film because it didnt try to be like mario that much, but 23 is desperately trying to appeal to mario fans, and the general feel of the movie doesnt lend to that. Like, the characters lend their way to a movie well, but not a mario movie. tonally, it doesnt match any existing mario content, but it tries so hard to, which is why it just feels off for a mario movie. dont get me wrong, the movie is still a 5/10, but i dont consider it a good mario movie that much. Like i said, the 23 movie just reminds me that i could be watching the Super Show, because it has its own identity that actually blends well with Mario. Super Show is for a different era of mario, the classic era, but it works with that era much better than the 23 movie tries to work with the modern mario era
