what is appropriate to use as a reference?

I've been thinking... if using ai art as a reference for a drawing is bad (if you think it's bad)... then using real art as a reference is not good either... because ai art takes art from people without permission... so using real art without permission as a reference is bad too... but wouldn't a real photo as a reference be bad too if it's not your's? i mean I guess if they say it's ok, then it's not bad... but you can't ask everyone which makes it hard and confusing... how would you know if it's ok if you can't ask them or tell if it's ok without permission...? right...? i also think using a games art style is stealing too... i think it's dumb when people make money off of it... it's someone's art style after all... how would you feel if someone took your art style...
