Hey everyone, Carnage here, this’ll be the last announcement on this game that is Battlegrounds related, as you could already guess by the title.
Before you read the below, know that: I’ve changed the game’s status to Finished/Stable, and all ratings have been erased as a result. Feel free to rate the game whatever you want, as it’s complete.
So, where do I begin…Battlegrounds was one of my first few FNaF fangames, originally meant to be a collab game between my best friend and I, but it went awry, and I decided to make it myself, which I did, and progress was slow for it as I was using a new engine, Construct 2 (coming previously from Stencyl) that I had only used for 2 months before starting on this project. Thankfully, everything went well, and the project did take some time, but was eventually completed and I was satisfied with it.
The original plan was to release it as how it was a couple months back and leave it as it was what I had intended, and it felt complete to me. However, the game exploded, and got immensely popular, much more than I had anticipated, YouTubers were playing it, and there were so many feature requests from everyone. I decided to continue work on the game, considering it an “Early Access” game, and added stuff requested in the feature requests for months.
As time went by, things had changed in my life, and a lot of stuff back then is vastly different to how it is now. For one, I knew how to use Construct 2 like the back of my hand, instead of being an amateur at it like I was when I first started working on Battlegrounds. I kept updating the game frequently with feature requests to make people happy, and I went out of my way to support it past its lifespan for as long as I possibly could. Even the Christmas update, which was the final update to this game, was (obviously) not intended to be done, but I did it because people were awaiting a seasonal update. It was obviously rushed, as I had already lost most of my motivation to work on Battlegrounds.
Not only had things changed in my life as time went by, but as Battlegrounds got frequently updated, the code got messier, and I started losing motivation to work on it because it felt complete to me, and everytime I wanted to add something new, it felt like I had to read a 200-page essay before even being able to start. The reason for the code being messy is because this project started when I was new to Construct 2, and it essentially built up my skill in the program. My code started becoming more organized, and it became a huge hassle to have to navigate through my old messy code that made no sense to me.
Now here we are, in 2017, and to be completely honest, I’ve lost all motivation to work on Battlegrounds. It is already more than what I intended, and I’ve been supporting it and working on it for too long, even for a fangame. Work on Battlegrounds started on March 20th, 2016, and the final update was on October 12th, 2016. That’s 8 months of work and constant support, on a fangame! Aside from that, as I said, the code is messy to the extent I don’t know where to start, it’s a huge hassle to try and figure out, and I’m NOT recoding the game, for a reason which I will state here as well: I’m planning to finally leave the FNaF community, for good, sometime in 2017, probably mid 2017. If you’re wondering why, it’s because I’ve been making fangames for it since 2014, and I think 3 years is good enough for me. It’s been a long run, and I’ve exploited every single possible way to make a “different” FNaF fangame, and I’m tired of the boundaries I’m limited to when I’m making a fangame, and moreover, I’m sick of making FNaF fangames, and the community isn’t what I remembered.
I know people are going to be upset by this post, but I’ve supported Battlegrounds for long enough, and I’ve been in the FNaF community for long enough as well. I want to move on from FNaF fangames onto actual original games, which I find to be way more rewarding, even if they are not as popular. I am not stopping game development or leaving GameJolt by any means, I am simply ceasing support/further updates for Battlegrounds, and leaving the FNaF fangame community sometime in 2017, basically, no longer making FNaF fangames. I know I promised more updates for Battlegrounds, but I can’t get myself to work on it, and I’ve updated it enough. It has come to the end of its’ time, and so have I, in terms of FNaF fangames.
TL;DR, Do NOT expect any more updates/support for Battlegrounds, I am moving on from it, and from FNaF fangames as a whole, and by the end of 2017, I will be making original games and no longer making FNaF fangames. It’s been a good long run, and Battlegrounds has truly impacted my life, but it’s time for me to move on, and do what I love, truly, which is making original games. Thank you to each and every one of you who have supported Battlegrounds and been there since the start, I appreciate it heaps. You guys will still be able to play Battlegrounds, servers will still be up, it’s simply that I’m no longer updating/supporting it. My future original games will be going on GameJolt, and possibly Itch.
Thank you everyone, and seriously, thank you for the support for this game, it means a lot to me! <3
