Menus!

That’s right, today’s topic is MENUS! Everybody’s favorite feature in a video game, am I right? Okay, maybe you’re not convinced but as a UI enthusiast I sure care about them.

Anyway. A lot of the menu design and implementation is copied directly from Ignition, so I’m just going to talk about the stuff that’s new to Crucible.

First off, you can finally access the game settings from the pause menu mid-level. I actually had to do some odd things to make it work - the menu isn’t actually in the same layout (or “screen” or “room” or whatever) as the level - it actually saves the state of the game and takes a screenshot to show the menu on top of! This was easier (and probably more efficient) than inserting the settings menu itself into every playable layout.

Second, I added icons representing each of the gamepad buttons. This really should have been in Ignition to begin with, but now it’s easier to tell at a glance what all the buttons on your controller do. And yes, they are customizable. I know I like putting my weapons on the shoulder buttons, but maybe that’s not your style.

Third is just a minor touch - the cursor is animated! You can see in the GIF, it stretches every time it moves so it’s easier to tell where it goes, especially when you press the Cancel/Back button.

Tune in next time to hear me gush about something else!

I updated the character select screen again!

I ditched the blurred overlay background for a stylish color-changing gradient, and added a spotlight to justify the players' shadows.

I also combined player & difficulty onto 1 screen for efficiency.

More underwater friends :)

Oodles of options!

Accessibility aids aplenty!

I added some more settings lately to toggle distorted graphics, fine-tune the audio mixing, and other stuff. Hopefully this should make the game accessible to more kinds of players.

Scenic subterranean lake ambiance.

It seems so peaceful... for now.

Sure has been a while since I posted something new, huh? Well, that's because I've been working on something big (that, and bugfixing).

Here's a little preview of that something!

Chapter 4 (K) is DONE! And about time too - that's my longest level to date.

With that, Phase 3 (of 3) Milestone 2 (of 4) is now done! The end of this 7+ year project is finally nearing completion, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

Behold, your reward for beating boss rush - this sick-as-heck 3D cutscene I threw together over the weekend!

Yeah, I know the game is mostly 2D, but I really felt like going way over the top with this game mode. I hope it paid off.

Presented without comment.

Some new background elements in Chapter 4 (N). The sky's a little less barren now that there are more floating rocks off in the background.

These also use 3D depth for accurate scaling, parallax scrolling, and distance fog.

I got a little creative block working on the lake level, so I skipped ahead for a bit.

This is the Boss Rush arena event! You fight many/all bosses back-to-back here.

I decided to go crazy with 3D effects here, since it happens in a virtual reality room.
