Finals are coming up so I don't have the energy to draw anything at the moment. Once they're over, I'll be able to learn Ren'Py! Until then, I thought I would write some backstory for the game.
The MC is a college student returning home for the holidays. As an avid player of otome games and the like, I want to make the visual novel diverse, but vaguely. My inspiration for the way characters interact with the MC was from Obey Me.
I liked the way the MC in that didn't have set characteristics such as gender or appearance. I'm going to do the same for this MC. The MC does have a set age, which is somewhere around 17-20 or something like that.
So, the MC, who I will refer to as Friend from now on, is returning to their childhood neighborhood and home for Christmas and New Year's. Friend hasn't been home in a while and hasn't talked to their family since being gone.
Friend has a very strained relationship with their parents. One of the main themes of the game, other than obsession, is escapism. As a child, Friend would play with the cast to escape from reality to get away from all the bad things they would encounter.
Because of this, Friend grew dependent on the cast to make their negative emotions go away. However, that all came to an end when Friend left for college. What Friend didn't know was that the cast, their toys, were also highly dependent on them.
A toy's main purpose is to tell a story, and when they don't have a story to tell anymore, they become lost and fade away. Mischief was the most dependent on Friend, so when they disappeared, Mischief lost herself in her obsession to bring them back and continue telling stories together.
This makes Mischief our main antagonist. This is all I'll share for now since I want to keep the plot of the game a surprise for the most part. Until I figure out how or where to find others interested in making TOYBOX with me, I'm probably going to keep posting random stuff until I have real progress.
