News for March | Happy easter!


It's already the end of the month? Damn that went by fast.
That means it's time for another update!

These past two months I took upon the challenge of re-writing some parts of the code, and this challenge is not over yet - however I already did some great progress.

Most of the code in the game is pre-underboard, meaning it's just simply not as good as it could be. This gave me an opportunity to build new, better features on top of already existing code. Let's start with something simple, the loading screen...

Features a new simpler design, and a muuuch faster loading time. For storing user data, I switched to a much safer and faster alternative (if anyone wants the nerd details let me know in the comments) and so far I'm very happy with it.


Next up is a new iteration of the main menu!

Looks very similar to the previous version, but under the hood it works much better. Let's see what's hiding inside.

For this version of the menu, I decided to go with a much different looking design. I find it much easier to move around like this, and there is no more need for a separate "game mode selection" menu.

As you can see, creating a private game is now even easier than before. The invite friends button is not yet complete, but the way it works is that after selecting any amount of friends, they will be invited to your private game after you start it! and they can join it from wherever they are (unless it's a battle).

Let's move on to settings...

Settings got quite the overhaul, making them look much more similar to UNDERTALE's settings. The main new addition are game borders! The border engine was created by @ReverbCat .

Here's a closer look at the borders:

So far the styles include Lens, Simple and Stars - there will be many more added as we go. The borders can be activated with and without fullscreen by pressing [F5].
The beautiful Stars border was created by @Napstalone .

Now let's talk overworld.

I have completely rewritten the multiplayer code! It is much more optimised now, in the past I had to add a limit to the room-lobby size, now it is no longer an issue. Doing this took me quite some time so I don't have much more overworld stuff to show right now.

A few days ago I posted this mysterious gif with me disappearing lol. You might've noticed that next to my username, is a little flag of Brazil! We're working on a system to make it easier for players to find others to talk/roleplay with and this is a big step forward. This is absolutely not final as we came up with some other ideas on how to execute this, but once we're done I'll make sure to update you guys.


I know this wasn't much, but I still need time to finish other features I've been re-creating and when they're ready, I'll include it in the next devlog.

But coding isn't the only thing we've been busy with!

Our amazing team, under the lead of @kikioviolet229 , have been creating and coming up with some amazing sprites that will make the game feel really fresh. The little Alphys from before, Sans and Asgore below are sneak-peaks at how the new sprites are going to look like!

I personally really like them and this new 'art-style' that we are going with, I can't wait for all the sprites to be finished so we can show them to you guys.

Conclusion...

For two months of work, I'd say we did a great job. Next month I'll definitely have more gameplay to show-off, but that depends on how hard school is going to be on my ass.
