nKaruga update : props engine, chapter 2

Hi there !

Having released the first beta version for nKaruga, the next task was to complete level 2. There were (and still are) several obstacles to it though :

  • Unlike level 1, which only contained “normal” waves of enemies, level 2 has environment, props, and a camera path. A direct consequence of this is that level 2 must be perfectly timed and will always last the exact same duration, unlike level 1, which pretty much waited for you to clear every wave before carrying on. After several hours of work, I’ve written the props engine and re-written the way the levels work, so that the system is modular enough for level 2 to exist. So yeah, everything is working pretty good right now, and I’m progressing quite fast on level 2. It should be out soon enough actually ! (without the 2nd boss of course)

  • Of course, another problem is sprites. I can’t draw for sh*t, so having to draw enemies and the boss myself will definitely hinder (or even stop) development. That’s why, if you are an artist and are willing to help me with this, let me know !

tl;dr : The hardest part was really the props engine and camera system, so now that it’s out of the way, development should be pretty fast. As I said, a second beta version featuring the full 2nd level should be available soon enough, while I’m searching for someone to help me with the 2nd boss’s sprites.

Level 2 has a big part where the screen is shrank down to 200 pixels of width. Good luck surviving that !

3D in nKaruga ? Nah, it's just a (clever) trick involving mad maths.

It nicely separates the snowy biome from the grassy one.

It's built with painted Ebonstone.
