Here we are, back with some updates from the depths of the coding ocean at the bottom of Floating Sandbox!
After receiving quite some feedback from many of you regarding the ability to save settings and being able to reload them, we have decided that version 1.13 - aptly codenamed "Save and Quit" - will finally offer this possibility, and thus for the past couple of weeks we have been furiously re-architecting the entire settings sub-system of the game.
We are not quite there yet, but we're making very good progress. Here's a preview of what's to come with the new settings.
Starting with version 1.13, your current settings will be automatically saved each time you quit the game, giving you the possibility to reload them next time by choosing "Reload Last-Played Settings" from the "Options" menu, or by hitting Ctrl^D. Note that we decided not to automatically load the last-saved settings because Floating Sandbox's customizable universe is notorious for allowing players to shoot on their foot :-) It doesn't take much, for example, to change an obscure setting and subsequently finding yourself with a weirdly-behaving world that you don't know how to come back from anymore. For this reason we prefer the game to always start with default settings, and then allow users to explicitly reload the last-saved settings at the click of a button (or keyboard key!).
You may also decide to save your settings under a specific name, e.g. "My Hot Ocean" or "Gabe's Alien World", which you may also reload at any time in the future. Considering that the settings that are saved now also include the ocean terrain, this means that you have the possibility to store forever your favorite gaming scenarios, complete with islands and abysses. The game will also come with a couple of off-the-shelf scenarios or "themes" - at this moment we're thinking things like "Lava World" and "The Marianas Trench" - but suggestions for more themes are definitely welcome!
One new behavior that might put you off at first is that settings will also be effective immediately - just changing sliders and values around will change the world instantaneously, without having to hit any "Apply" or "OK" buttons. This new behavior definitely makes for a very pleasant experience when experimenting with the physics of the Floating Sandbox world.
On top of the settings re-architecture, we are also working on a more physically-based new small feature, which we hope will see the light in 1.13 as well. But we're keeping mum on this one :-)
Have some more patience and keep enjoying the 1.12 thermodynamics!
