Somber Piano
Hey, everyone. This log is going to be a little bit different than the last few logs I've made on here. The main reason for that is because I've mostly been working on music for the game. That means there will be no gifs of new gameplay or anything like that. Instead, I'm going to talk about my thoughts, feelings, and experiences creating music for the first Day of the game. I've made three songs so far, which are very closely related to each other.
Uncertainty
This is the first track I've made for the game. Technically, there are two other songs that I've made (which you can listen to on the main page), but those were mainly for my teaser video for the game. I still plan on using "Feline Exodus" in the main game, but that won't be implemented until farther in.
You can listen to "Uncertainty" now on this game's page. If you have already listened to it, you might understand why this post is titled the way it is. I really wanted a somber-sounding piano to drive this song throughout. However, I also wanted it to have a slight playfulness to its sound, which is basically everything else you here in it with the drum machine and the saxophone. Yes, that is a midi saxophone. And if you were wondering, I'm using GarageBand to develop the music right now, so everything is midi at this point.
This song was inspired by the song, "The Forgotten Village" in the game Folklore for the PS3. You may here some similarities in the beginning between both tracks. My wife, who doesn't even play video games that much, was able to figure out that my song sounded somewhat like the other song in the beginning just from hearing it.
This song appears when you are wandering around Ehh's house on Day 1.
Uncertain Hunger
A variation of "Uncertainty", if you hadn't already guessed that. This song appears when you are using the fridge on Day 1, as the title implies. Instead of piano, the main instrument in this is the flute. It plays most of the same notes as the piano, but at a slightly faster tempo.
Behind that there is a very simple beat from a drum machine that I think compliments the flute very well. I also chose to use a synthesized bass to parallel the saxophone from "Uncertainty", however it only does about half the notes.
This song is also a lot shorter, clocking in at about 25 seconds I believe.
The Lost Knight
The last variation of "Uncertainty" that I made for Day 1. Any other music that appears on Day 1 is going to be completely original.
This variation uses french horns as the base of the music. The tempo is even faster than "Uncertain Hunger". To help drive the faster tempo, there are two sets of drum beats which also give it the sense of a marching song.
However, the clarinet helps give it a sadder tone than one would expect from a marching song. The clarinet is also not a one-for-one repeat of the saxaphone from "Uncertainty." It changes halfway through to really emphasize a sadder tone.
In Conclusion...
I'm only putting out "Uncertainty" for you to listen right now because I want to save some things for you to discover in the actual game. I don't want to give away all my surprises right off the bat.
Also, this log took a little too long to make. Things have been quite a bit off for me recently. Funny, because it kind of parallels these songs I've made for the game.
I know I already said this, but I think I need to emphasize it a little more: I'm probably not going to upload these logs as regularly as I have been. Obviously, if there are any big developments then I'll let you know, but there are so many other things that I really need to focus on right now. Life's been a little rough recently, and I can't let it keep being that way. I really do want to make things better, and to do that I'm probably not going to be working on the game as much as I have been.
Don't worry, though. Like I said, this game is important to me. I'm going to finish it eventually. It may just take a little longer than I expected.
Until the next log comes out,
Joshua
