POPGOES Brilliance Devlog 4: April Fools!


Hello, citizens of Ultraviolet City! Roses is here.

April fools! There wasn’t any build regarding Chapter 1 but instead, a short testing teaser build!

Now, this doesn’t mean Chapter 1 isn’t developed (heavens, no). We’re still working on it but we put our focus onto this small build!

I will explain a lot about it today! But, first…

Happy birthday to Bonnie Glade! Our wonderful paranormal investigator! Hope she has a great day today!

You also might have noticed that she’s painted slightly different than the previous birthday pieces; that’s because she’s painted with an entirely different brush!
This change will also be reflected in the in-game cutscenes (Yes, there are cutscenes). The ones that were finished before the brush change will not be repainted, you will see what I mean on the full game.


Now, let’s talk about the build.

To put it bluntly, this build is meant to be short, easy and can be seen as “shitpost-y” (I mean, seriously, look at the background and the duck in this screenshot). However, this build is basically a small view on how the actual game would be.

The music is composed wonderfully by Dentra, the smooth and easy UI design and the font choice was done by Patata, and of course, the script and sprite design was made by yours truly.

Also, you probably noticed on the credits that I did the background design and you would think this is a part of the “joke” (to keep the facade of an actual game), but I actually did do a background design -- fully completed and fully colored! You would have to complete the game entirely to get it however... so good luck to those who've found it then.

To follow up with this, there are 4 endings you can achieve out of this game. You'll then receive a hollowed-out star upon completion. Click it, and you will see it!

Note: If you are wondering the absence of Zoura’s name on the “background design” portion of the credits in the build, that’s because she hasn’t worked on this specific background, besides giving feedback. She was pretty busy at the time so, it was completely understandable. She is still on the team!

And now, this is where I end on non-spoiler territory. I highly recommend you to play the build and check it out yourself! The game is, again, a fairly short experience. Give feedback on the comments of the game page and let us know what you think! We’ll try and see if we can update the build to make it better (don’t expect on TOO much changes, though).

Speaking of updates, expect a small update either today or in a few days! The update would give the credits an addition of people who gave us feedback behind the scenes! (I accidentally forgot as I typed out the credits quickly, I apologize…). We would also give credits to them on the game page to reflect this, since we kept it a surprise for quite some time (There will be…familiar faces on here). Along with a small QOL change to the secret ending!

Now, here are the spoiler parts…

As you know, in the “secret” ending, a completely different character is speaking to Bonnie Glade in an e-mail.

Perhaps, you may have theorized this (the green text box is a hint…), but the character is indeed based on Popgoes The Weasel himself!

You may have noticed that within this game page that there is no mention of him anywhere. That’s because he is pretty much vital to the game’s story.

(Let’s just hope you haven’t theorized that he might be dead or something worse…)

“But Roses, when will you reveal his design and name?!” Well, it's actually a requirement to 100% POPGOES: Evergreen, and then you will see his design!

…I’m joking. But, you will see him in the full game, eventually.

He’s an important character related to Bonnie, as he is her older brother. His story, including hers, is pretty important for Brilliance’ story and themes as a whole.

Parting from the spoilers section -- another thing I'd like to note is the “gameplay” within the build itself. I won’t say what it is until we get gameplay footage (don’t expect it to be coming so soon), but it is slightly different than how it’s currently developed at the moment. This is mainly because I figured out a mechanic that fits well thematically and doesn’t increase the amount of scripting needed!


That's all I have to say for today’s devlog. While we will go back and handle our own stuff, we will continue to work on this game as per usual!

I won’t write a devlog until August 8th… which is the Hesper twins’ birthday AND the FNAF anniversary (to let you know, that is a complete coincidence on my part, haha.)
