POPGOES - Weekly Update (28/04)

Hey everyone,

Time for another weekly update and fanart showcase. I am going to be removing "fanart showcase" from the titles of these, as I feel like some people are actually ignoring the article or believing I'm prioritising fanart over my own projects... But I will continue showcasing fanart in the body of the article itself!

Thank you to everyone for placing charged stickers on my posts!

Click here for a guide on how to place charged stickers and get POPGOES stickers!

The penultimate Blackrabbit piece sticker is now live. Good luck collecting the limited edition Blackrabbit Left Arm, and then next week you'll be able to complete your Blackrabbits with the Torso piece! I hope you guys have had fun with this goofy little "event" lol.

POPGOES x Youtooz Pin Set:

A quick reminder that the POPGOES x Youtooz Pin Set is only available to order for another WEEK! Which means when the next devlog drops, they won't be available anymore. Scary.

Don't miss out on this... even if you're just gonna resell them later at a crazy price (have you guys seen how much Popgoes the Weasel Youtooz figures go for nowadays?!).

One of the coolest, stylish products I've worked on for POPGOES so far. And if they do well, you can expect more near Halloween!

POPGOES Evergreen:

Some cool stuff went on this week for Evergreen. Last week I talked about the new reflection shader for the monitor, which mostly affects the "tray" under the screen which opens up to reveal the Simon Says buttons. I was hoping that we would be able to get the tray animation sorted inside of Clickteam with the reflection shader active, but unfortunately Emil was not able to do that in time.

Instead though, Garrett has rendered a preview of how it looks when rendered in Blender. It will look very similar in Clickteam:

tray.gif

The Simon Says buttons in the original game were glowing, but they were always exposed and were kind of distracting, especially in the earlier nights when they didn't even do anything.

I'm sure I've talked about this before, but as a recap, these buttons will only be visible when you access the Server Room camera (CAM 7), when the tray will automatically slide open. It will slide closed when you go to a different camera. In Evergreen, Blake will slowly make his way towards the player in the left view, and when he's up close, he'll ask you if you're still using your machine (a bit like a Netflix "are you still watching?" notification), and to get him to piss off you need to enter a code that he's showing to you on his phone. To enter this code in the first place you need the tray to open. So yeah, that's it. When Blake is near, you go to the Server Room and use it as a terminal to enter a code. Nothing actually ever happens in the Server Room. And nothing ever has.

Next up, we have been working on some stuff for the Car Park. Firstly, Garrett has been working on the sky colours and the technical gameplay stuff, like overlays and how Stone's renders will work. Evergreen features a day-night system, which is used throughout the game but will be most noticeable during the Endless game mode (since you can literally play into the daytime).

While working on this, we decided that the outdoor lamps that are used to light up the Car Park during the night time will actually turn on and off, depending on the time of day/night. They will be a separate overlay. It will make the morning/day parts of the game feel much more realistic.

Here's a small unrendered preview of how the Car Park looks during its "dawn" phase:

It's likely that we will have the opportunity to share some stuff from Evergreen in another Dawko charity stream, maybe next month. And I think having a full Car Park reveal, with a slider that Dawko can use to change the time of day, would be awesome. It would include dusk, night, morning, day, and the lamps turning off and on.

Oh, something else: Alexis has finished a THIRD special character! Can't talk about it, as usual, but it's nice progress for the post-night stuff.

Lastly for Evergreen, we have worked on Stone and his mechanic out of the window. Stone's mechanic has changed but I won't go into much detail of it here. I will say that it should be a lot more fun, scary, and controllable. In the original game, you'd get screamed at for no reason and you had no way to prevent or avoid it. Not the case in Evergreen!

Regardless, he will scream at you.

image.png

An AMAZING "mini-jumpscare" of Stone screaming at the player has been animated by NeeTroo, and that ^ is the final frame for it. It is seriously spooky.

As you've probably noticed, his eyes are NOT glowing. We decided that this dark shot of his natural eyes is actually a lot scarier and more realistic than the giant glowing eyes.

image.png

Though I guess it's up to preference.

We are going to reserve the glowing eyes JUST for the jumpscare animations. It was actually kind of weird how Stone was given this special power in the original game where he had the hallucination eyes when screaming at the player, and would also teleport to all of the cameras (a mechanic that we're almost definitely removing, aside from maybe in a toggleable post-game challenge).

Also I guess as a lore tidbit - in Evergreen Stone does canonically scream at the player. It's not a hallucination. If you were concerned at a the idea of an exception for "glowing eyes = hallucination".

myPOPGOES:

Lots of stuff done for the premium version of myPOPGOES. Firstly, NeeTroo is finished with the unlockable Toy shells. We've decided to only make two - one for The Popgoes Pizzeria, and one for Candy's Burgers and Fries. On top of this, we have worked on something called "Character Cartridges", which are plastic carts that get plugged into the side of the myPOPGOES toy to change which character you play as.

image.png

The renders for these will need to eventually be traced over by Sian for the hand-drawn style, as well as go over some filters, but for context this is where the cartridges will go:

^ That's a Blake cartridge which is why it's yellow.

Patata has also begun working on some challenges. Challenges will be optional post-game levels which add a new gameplay mechanic to the stock Day 5 level, essentially making each of them a unique Day 6 of sorts.

Here's an example of a challenge called Mini-P (the obscure reference is intentional):

minip.gif

Tiny pizzas! They only take two "chunks" to cook in the oven, as opposed to four, so they are very quick (and satisfying) to stack up on. However, they don't restore NEARLY as much hunger.

I'm very good at the game, but I only barely managed to finish this challenge. It sounds simple, or even easier than default, but it's tough! We have two other challenges programmed, but they are being tweaked a lot so that they aren't too easy, but also aren't impossible.

I have also worked on more diary entries from Bonnie. And I actually have a question: Is it realistic for a moody 10 year old girl to write "bitch" in a private diary? I'm pretty sure that's totally reasonable, but I was never a 10 year old girl so I guess I don't know for sure. Do you have a sister or a cousin around that age or something? If you do, do you reckon she would say "bitch" in a diary that she thinks nobody would read? Important stuff, let me know! And don't bother asking WHY I'm asking this, or if it's allowed in the Fanverse... just answer the question or don't!

Also, the premium version of myPOPGOES will also support WASD key controls, as well as the MOUSE! Really cool. I know at least one person who was unable to play myPOPGOES because they had a ridiculous keyboard with no arrow keys. Now they can play!

Merch:

A small heads up that the Popgoes the Weasel Hex plushie's ship date was pushed to the 30th of April due to some minor quality control concerns. If you've ordered one, it should be with you sometime in May! If you haven't... order one now!

Alrighty that's it for this week! Thanks for reading, and thanks for all of the support as always!

We are still hard at work on the reprogrammed version of myPOPGOES !

Plenty has been done, but there's plenty left to do as well. Who knew remaking a game from scratch could take a while...?

Thank you for your patience!

One of the scrapped "sets" for the trading cards in POPGOES Evergreen was going to be a bunch of characters with theming ending in "punk", like Steampunk Popgoes.

Fun fact, when we needed to make a new model for the Popbin in 2021, two artists (Mr Nobo and StupidButterfly) made concept art for his new design!

Here's how it looked. I feel like we should revisit the smiling "TRASH" design lmaooo
