Progress Report - June 2023


Happy Pride Month!

Before June ends, we're sharing our latest progress on Demo v2.0. While we're keeping this devlog on the shorter side, we look forward to everyone's thoughts!

By the way, we recently uploaded the entire TS!UNDERSWAP Demo v1.0 soundtrack to our YouTube channel! We'll be keeping the 2.0 to tracks to our SoundCloud until the eventual major update release.

(As a friendly notice, the status of progress reports -- including whether we have plans to post one each month or not -- can be found on our Twitter! We keep getting questions about this.)


Brief Catch-Up!

In case you missed our May 2023 Progress Report, here's a quick recap!

  • Writing -- Roughly 3/4 of Starstruck Village is written, excluding quests.

    • This includes a major character interaction, and the end-of-area script.

    • The first major character encounter for Crystal Springs was written.

  • Artwork -- Various overworld, environment, menu, battle, and concept art assets were created as needed.

  • Soundtrack -- We had 26/36 planned tracks for Starlight Isles completed.

  • Programming -- The final major boss of Starlight Isles' Ruthless route was fully implemented, alongside other major and side content.

As for everything else covered:

  • Dynamic Music: Koffin Keep -- While remaking the music for Koffin Keep, we decided to experiment with dynamic music! As you complete objectives throughout this nonlinear area, the music will change to indicate your progress.

  • Wait, What's "Ruthless?" -- "Compassion" (Pacifist) and "Ruthless" (Genocide) are our new main route names! We decided on these to better reflect the direction we're taking, and distinguish them from Undertale's.

    • ("Neutral" and "Evacuation Neutral" are still the same as before.)


Progress Updates

Back in December 2022, we reported a then-estimated:

  • 80-90% functional completion of Starlight Isles (likely closer to ~83%)

  • 26% functional completion of TS!UNDERSWAP!

  • (These numbers are no longer accurate, though we have not estimated new ones yet.)

We're now focused on getting Starlight Isles fully playable from start to finish! This includes:

  • Prioritizing content required for area-wide progression (final scenes, major assets, etc.)

  • Implementing major content in-game with completed assets.

  • Finishing Starstruck Village script content, and other important writing.

  • Creating assets as-needed.

  • Making refinements to existing content based on team feedback.

Here's what this means for our general progress:

  • Writing -- We're making progress on the Starstruck Village and end-of-area script!

    • Of the village's residential section, three buildings have been fully written.

    • Writing for optional character content is in-progress.

    • Miscellaneous minor writing as-needed throughout Starlight Isles has been written.

  • Artwork -- Necessary assets for various village content, polish material, and Crystal Springs preparation have been made.

  • Soundtrack -- We currently have 31/36 planned tracks for Starlight Isles completed!

    • The dynamic variants of "Koffin Keep" are finished! We're testing them in-game before we post them publicly.

    • 5 other tracks are in-progress / nearing completion, including the remakes of "Count Koffin-K" (ExtendoFun) and another.

    • Crystal Springs has 2 tracks completed, and 2 more nearing completion.

  • Programming -- All route variations of Starlight Isles' final major boss are implemented!

    • Finished writing for Starstruck Village content has been implemented.

    • Major character content is being implemented.

    • Assets and content for the Starlight Isles / Crystal Springs transition have been added in-game.

That's everything for now!

We're really excited with the progress we've been making for Starlight Isles -- and although there's still a ways to go here and there, Crystal Springs is getting closer and closer!

While we can't guarantee your ask(s) will be answered, feel free to read over what has been answered thus far -- and submit your own, if you want! Just please make sure to read the rules for asks.
