If you're not sure what an indie game is, it's a game made by small independent developers!
Indie games are incredibly popular today, but why? Well, here's some reasons:
The ideas and concepts introduced is so creative, which makes the game not only more enjoyable and interesting to play; but also makes each and every indie game very unique
Most indie games are really good at story-telling, and the gameplay is also very engaging
Presents an amazing impact in the end, it could be a good feeling of accomplishment, better understanding of the topics the game tackled about, etc.
For indie games that focuses mostly on story, it sometimes dives into interesting topics, and broadens them throughout the game. This helps the players understand the topic more, and educates them about what it's like or about. There are games that focuses on morality (OFF and UNDERTALE), mental health (OMORI and Night in the Woods), religion (Cult of the Lamb), and many more.
Treats games like art, there are some games that hold a special message for players to understand. Take for an example, Celeste: Self-Acceptance, Perseverance, and Self-Improvement

It's very inspirational to see how a small team of people can work on an incredible game together, it really shows that passion can get you that far if you persevere.
