What happened?

Okay, so let's get back to where #95 left off:

I've built a new build for the game, which means that effectively, ALL of the old coders, beta testers, and such do not get credit for this game anymore. So who's getting this cut? Well... Luigikaboy, JoeyTheMarillFan, and Jaluz.

Because I want to drive this game's plot into a different direction, this means that Tyfoid, Rockstar64, and JoeyTheMarillFan and Jaluz again, are getting the boot off of the writing department.

I'm not sure whether or not I should keep the original stuff of the voice lines. While true, PastelSatan is sadly getting the boot because obviously we broke off (And that's for the better.) and this means we gotta find a good replacement. So far, Natty is taking up the role, but I haven't gotten any idea of who to play as Jonathan. So I thought "Hey, why not get the guy who is named the same AS the guy to voice him?" And that's what I thought.

So in conclusion, Jaluz's pretty much gets demoted down to "Based off of X" role whilst the majority of the development team are getting the boot because simply put: some are LEECHES and didn't contribute much to it, or they did and I barely remember how did they contribute, like Rockstar64 AND Joey, and it's more or less they aren't working for this new direction at all.

The next section is comparing and contrasting the old build and the new build, so let's start off with the first screen in the game: the title screen.

While they haven't changed much visually, I will say that there's an added option to change the windows.

In case if you can't read, a new option in the NEW build is sandwiched between "Keyboard Config." and "BGM Volume," which is the new visual option: Window skins.

It's on the tin, so there's an extra 5 window skins you may choose, which is Dark, Green, Orange, Purple, and Pink. Light is the default window skin for both versions, so for consistency, I'll leave the option alone.

Now, let's focus onto the next part: the introduction, or basically the scene where Jonathan wakes up because of Sasara. It's recommended that you wear hearphones in this one, because I'll let you watch these two cutscenes on your own. (Can't embed them for some reason, so yeah, you're going to have to click on the links.)

Now, the added difference between the two is that there's a new name box for the characters. Also now effects are applied to characters, so like Sasara doesn't sound like she's talking to you normally when she's on the phone. Yes, I'm still using PastelSatan's lines, but that's temporary, so expect it to sound different once it's finished. So let's get to the next one; Jonathan's home.

image.png

As you can see, the room is much more smaller and also that the Club Penguin CD Player is missing, along with the framed picture. I should note that it'll appear eventually so don't worry about it until I get it done. Why downsize it? I remember there was a Newgrounds review that was on a RPG Maker MV game. The reviewer in question complained about how games like these have an unnecessary big rooms, so I decided to shrink it down and if I wanted to have it big, then I must have it designed to be reasonably big enough. So assuming you played the Demo, which is a buggy mess, you would proceed to the next area, outside of Sasara's bunker.

image.png

Now, like the previous area, this is still a WIP, so again, expect changes. I didn't like the idea of having the bunker's latch be there by having a different patch of grass, which would've made obvious that there's something down there. In the old build, you can go out of the bunker to go visit back to your house or to the shopping street, but for the new build, that's removed. It doesn't make sense as to why would Jonathan be allowed to move to those areas story wise, because this is in the beginning and the tutorial should guide you to how the game works. Sure, you do explore, but let's limit the options at the moment. Now, you may think "Where is the Annoying Nerd?" And I say that he's still here in the game, I'm just thinking of how can I put him in the game because of the direction of the new story. You see, in the new build, you don't go to the shopping street before you arrive to the bunker. And this is mainly because I want items that recover HP to be a combination of food items AND medicine items. At least in the original, there was a reason to go get them since potions are technically medicine.

Speaking of a new direction, I wanted to retool the use of dreams for the new build. In the old build, dreams were mainly used for plot and lacked any visuals, as they were just the dialogue and a black screen. In fact, originally, I wanted them to be at least a cutscene you interact in. But I gave it another spin: let's make dreams serve for plot AND extra gameplay. I remember fondly of my childhood dreams where sometimes I would revisit certainly dreams, like for example, I had a dream about some scary being. At first, I was too scared to hide away, but when I came back to the dream, I hide under the table to avoid the being. Another one was this bizarre stick man car dream, where originally, a stick man kidnapped me in my mom's car. Then when I came back, I beat up the kidnapper and was thrown off the car and into the road, only for me to get shot by the kidnapper. ...Yeah. So in light of this new idea, I made this.

image.png

Yes. This is a dream about Five Nights at Fuckboy's. For dreams, I wanted it to give a visual flare by having the artstyle be different to establish that. For characters, I wanted to give them this bloom effect to hammer in the dream idea. Now, the camera for the dream was a programming NIGHTMARE. Mainly because of how the mini-map system works. You see, the map tracks you down by regions and it uses the Player's region ID. Both West and East hall have two regions, so this made the south part of the halls impossible to track by region. So I fixed that issue by having a event with a long hitbox telling the game to fix this discrepancy, so that way, you can see Jonathan regardless of where you went and maintain the idea that you were being watched by a security guard. Because I wanted to maintain the illusion of it being like a Fuckboy's game, I made a frame that has one hole that fits exactly 17 x 13 tiles, just like the original game. Except the tiles are 32^2 BUT it can be scaled to 16^2 and 48^ with whole numbers.

In fact, dreams allow me to tread to ideas that weren't used or couldn't be used within the main story. The idea of the Pizzeria being a dungeon is a idea that originated from both the old Jonathan's Adventure builds that I saw when Jaluz. was streaming them in a Discord voice channel AND a scrapped game idea of Jonathan's Adventure VX. But I don't think VX would have the same execution as JABE. In JABE, the dream does have extra dialogue that can be accessed with friendship. Yes. Friendship is here, don't fret over it being gone. While the quests remain the same, they're different because of where the items are. The only quest in the game that is the same in Fuckboy's is Bonnie's quest, where you have to go get his missing head. While getting Chica IS here in this dream, the event for that is applicable for EVERY member you didn't get.

The third difference is Foxy's quest. In Fuckboy's, you had to burn down the cove to force Foxy to get in your party. In the dream, however, it has two routes and that's basically thanks to Lilith. In case if you don't know, Lilith is basically Kabi, but as a Mew. Here's what she looks like.

dream-lilith.png

And my head was cooking up ideas. What if Lilith was Kabi, it's that Kabi is an alter ego Lilith posesses. And the routes don't just end with Kabi just joining your party. If you get Lilith's quest, you get Lilith to join your party, and because you have Lilith instead of Kabi, you cannot use Snap since it's exclusive to Kabi only and this isn't applicable when she's Lilith. And this reflects for EVERY dialogue she's in, plus including party members you gotten first. In fact, your party can give extra dialogue on the basis of who do you have in it.

Well that's a mouthful of JABE crap, so let's put it to rest here.
