September Devlog!


Alright, before we get into it I want to say that the main focus this month was on coding and spriting. We have made much progress and many important decisions. Without further ado let’s get right into it!

1. Important Changes
For a while we have been using GameMakerStudio 1.4 now. Fanimators engine “LEADTUNER “ has helped me understand the GML way better than before. But this version of GMS wasn’t really it for me. I did not feel too comfortable with the restrictions and the whole system, as I am still more used to GameMakerStudio 2.3 rather than this one. Meyland came up to me and recommended moving to GMS 2.3. I firstly was not entirely sure, but he convinced me and so I created a group of our coders and discussed if we should or shouldn’t use GMS 2.3.
In the end we have decided to move to GMS 2.3 and the main positive aspects is the faster progress we will have due to more coders being active now (With evacuxte now too), which allows me to also script, while people are coding. Sadly, this means that the 32BIT support is now gone and I apologize to anyone, who has a 32BIT OS and can’t play the game. It was a tough choice to make.

2. Progress
We made a lot of progress this month. With many new spriters we now finally managed to have proper sprites to use In-Game. On top of that we have made some decent progress on coding as well, as we have many things done for the Overworld design wise. Hooded of course is the one making the rooms as unique and awesome as possible, we talk about the puzzles and aesthetics of the Cave.

3. Coding
Of course, we are still not too far coding wise. I still can’t set a proper date when the release of the first demo would realistically be. It is difficult to say. Many sprites are now implemented into the game, with even unique animations for running or walking. Many decorations are also now set and the code was modified to fit more into the game. Though the main focus still lies on simplification of the code, which isn’t too relevant from a “gamers perspective “, but is relevant to us coders. Meyland is actually simplifying many codes so we don’t need to waste so much time on little things. It is also important for newcomer coders to understand the code faster.
Other than that we will probably finish the decorations, mostly effects like light shaders or rain effects.

4. Spriting
We have made A LOT OF PROGRESS with spriting stuff. Big shoutouts to C0ster, pancakez_, Hooded, L.J. and Mono for all the sprites. I am more than satisfied with what they came up with and I think they all fit to the game as well. The whole aesthetics of the Cave has been improved so much, I actually never really imagined it like this, it’s way better than my imagination. I will not show all sprites, since most of them are rather “boring “ to showcase (tilesets, overworld stuff), but we also made some cool character sprites.

And, well what can I say, more is yet to come!

5. Design change
We made one big design change, which was actually planned a while ago, as the lore of Sans has changed. And so I present ya’ll the new designs!

6. End
