When I took the Narcissus box to Game Makers Yorkshire, I realised I’d forgotten an essential component - buisness cards! Totally slipped my mind and only through wombling a pen did I manage to keep track of a bunch of contacts!
To fix this, I decided to create something memorable for the player to take away from the experience. Now cards are cool and everything, but another thing you can put in your wallet that’s pretty cool is coins. The basic premise for the coins are whichever character you complete the game with is the coin you recieve (e.g. you complete the game with the white player, you get the white coin).
I have access to a laser cutter, so I put a design together to fit on a poker chip sized coin. Poker chips feel awesome to handle and make the best noise ever, so I got the dimensions for an average sized poker chip and used that as a reference. The coins were made out of black and white perspex (acrylic), so they’d be shiny and wouldn’t have ugly burn marks all over them or require additional painting (wood).
I tried making all the writing see through, but pieces of the writing kept falling out (A’s & R’s). Whilst the text was only engraved, the character was fully cut out, so you could see through the coin.
Here are some photos of the coins, I hope you’ll consider heading to an event of mine to see the game in the flesh!
