Hello everyone! I’m Penrose, the, (for now), sole creator of Emerald Reef.
So, you may be asking, what IS Emerald Reef?
Emerald Reef, to put it simply, is my first-ever attempt at creating a video game. I’ve always been fascinated with game design, and I even dabbled with it in the past, but that’s really about it.
However, as of lately, I’ve gotten more and more interested in it, and have decided to turn it into a full-time project.
Now, as it’s my first time creating a game, it may or may not be good. More than likely, it probably won’t be very good - but hey! That’s okay! We live and we learn, right? All we can do is improve moving forward.
As for the story behind Emerald Reef, (which as I go along will be referenced as “E.R.”), it’s kind of a mix of stories I’ve always wanted to tell through writing. I enjoy writing in my spare time, but I wouldn’t call it a passion, as I don’t do it very often.
E.R. itself is heavily-inspired by RPG games such as Undertale, Deltarune, the Mario & Luigi RPG games, and many others.
The best way to describe what this game will be like is a turn-based-combat RPG game with two different paths to venture down.
Each path will have it’s own linear story separate from the other that’s connected with the world around it. (Disclaimer: If you go down one path, it won’t affect the other if you choose to go back and play it; however you may only play one path at a time.)
I have some really fun ideas in store for this game, especially the combat system. I’m also still developing the main story, as well as the stories for each path.
I don’t want E.R. to be your typical RPG game. I want it to be more than that. I want it to be an experience that can be enjoyed no matter what path you take. I don’t want E.R. to have typical turn-based combat similar to stock combat in engines such as RPG Maker — (which I’ve used myself, no hate there).
In short, I really hope you’ll follow me along during this wonderful journey that is game development. I will make mistakes along the way, and, truthfully, I’d like to create a small team to help me out with some of the gameplay mechanics, art, features, etc.
If I end up making it myself, I end up making it myself. It’ll still be my story at the end of the day, and your own personal experience.
Feel free to share this with friends, colleagues, family, your dog, pet boot - whoever you like! Spreading the word would definitely help me out a lot!
ALSO — In regards to, “When will we get a demo?” or some variation of that question, I have absolutely no idea when that will be possible. Honestly, it’ll just happen whenever it’ll happen. (I don’t even have a single tileset ready or even started — just some character designs with some animations).
Anyways, if you made it to the bottom of this lenghty post, congrats! You did it! You succeeded in something so minimal, that I’m gonna give you a virtual pat on the back! (various patting noises)
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope you’re as excited as I am to start this journey!
