Unboxing and Setting Up
I should clarify that I bought the Meta Quest 3 with 128GB with a blue head-strap. First, the head-strap came in a completely different box ( I thought it would come pre installed) and when I did try to install it the instructions weren’t that clear and when I was removing the original head-strap and frame I was so scared to break it cause it was incredibly hard to come out. But the headset frame was incredibly easy to remove when the head-strap was annoying to adjust and fix. But the headset is incredibly small and is a perfect device for a on the go experience. It’s already half the size of the quest 2 with a bigger FOV ( oculus 2 was 90 degrees and the 3rd is 105) and the controllers…. Dear god they are perfect. They are incredibly light and I haven’t had any issues with tracking. These are probably the best controllers I have ever used.
Setting up the headset was the easiest thing in the world. Even your 2 year old kid that you didn’t know you had can do it. It takes 5 minutes and I didn’t even need to sign in. It Bluetooth connects to my phone and auto signs in base on the account you are signed into on the meta app. Overall the setup and unboxing was a solid 8/10.
First experience with mixed reality
The mixed reality blew my damn mind. The headset asks you to walk around and look around your room to scan your environment for the ultimate mixed reality. You have a choice to either have your oculus home to be mixed reality with your environment or have a virtual home. And if you are in the middle of a game and need to talk to someone, instead of taking of the headset… you can just double tab the side of the headset to turn on pass through mode which pauses your game and lets you see your environment in full color without needing to take off the headset.
A experience that comes with the headset has you shoot ailens after they crash through your ceiling and start breaking through your walls to reveal that you are secretly on an alien planet. This was made insanely well. And I recommend highly.
How it feels on the head
the headset feels amazing on the head but the head strap that I spent 50$ on is a pain in the head. Literally. The plastic from it jams into the back of my head and it hurts.
Performance
The performance is around double then the quest 2. And is amazing. The library of this headset is massive and all are well optimized. Besides one… Rec room is the most unoptimized piece of shit on the headset. It somehow runs worst on the quest 3 then the quest 2. Which pisses me off. Compared to the 90-120FPS I get from most games I get like 30 in rec room. Fix the game rec room.
Is It worth Buying?
If you are a sucker for mixed reality and went the best performance then it is an amazing device to buy. But if your quest 2 works fine then I don’t see why you would upgrade. My quest 2 barely runs so I needed to upgrade. I would rate the headset a 7/10 and is worth buying. I am having a great time using it. And Xbox is gonna be able to connect with your headset near Christmas time! Can’t wait. Tell me your thoughts about the headset!
