Since I'm currently working on the balancing for the game, I figured I'd give you guys some options to customize the difficulty (In game).
This is a bit of a concept, since I'm currently trying to figure out how I can add those options in a simple way.
First, I'll tell you what kinds of options you can have:
Second chance
With Second chance enabled, you'll get a warning when you're about to enter a "Dead end Level" (something like "Hidden Sanctum" or "Sky Sanctuary?")
You can either ignore that warning and enter the level, or you can pay 1 life in order to "escape" that level and you'll get send back to the previous level (in that case being Dark Quadrant and Scrap Brain zone)
It will be for free if it's your first time (in that playthrough). That way, even people who are playing on Last Chance difficulty can use this option.
Easier levels
With that option enabled, levels would get easier.
While I'm not really sure how exactly I'm going to use that options on some levels. I thought about this option changing things like:
-Chasers are slower
(makes levels like Hill and Dark Quadrant easier)
-Less hazards in certain areas
(like removing multiple spikes in levels to make it easier)
-Checkpoints in some levels
(Specifically added this feature for Dark Quadrant. Could be paired well with the Second chance option so you don't have to redo the entire level if you failed to escape correctly. Could be a great addition for future levels)
-No punishment
(Something that might only affect Dark Quadrant since this is like the only level where you can get punished in a way... but it would disable the rage bonus)
Handicaps
Handicaps makes boss fights easier and these are the things that this option would affect:
-Bosses spawn less projectiles
(Might not affect the Knuckles' boss fight, but it would definitely affect Eggman's boss fight and perhaps future bosses)
-Less HP
(Idk if I'm going to add this feature, because I feel like the HP for the bosses are pretty good)
-Removing some gimmicks
(Maybe something like pinch mode or instantly dying if you receive damage while frozen)
Well that's it for now.
Maybe I'll give you even more customization options, so you can enable and disable some things within a level.
People might like the checkpoints in some levels, but maybe they aren't a fan of the other features. But I would have to look if the general thing works the way I envisioned it.
If that doesn't work, then I guess I could make a copy of every frame that gets affected by those options, but that would be a bit too much if I give you the more customizable variant of this whole feature.
As for the Easier levels option, what do you guys think? What should I add to make the levels easier? You can also just tell me what I could change for a single level and those changes would apply when you enabled the Easier levels option.
BUT be warned, I might not add every single thing.
(In case I won't give you the customizable variant of this whole feature)
Anyway, once I figured the whole thing out, I'll look if the more customizable variant can be done in a simple way and if that doesn't work, then I'll just add all the changes in one single option.
