it's time.
pay no attention to the fact that we are over halfway through July: Trouble on the Corner of Sugar & Spice's demo is now fully functional and ready to play!
Here's a quick overview of what's changed from the prototype.
NEW FEATURES:
Audio: The game now has music, ambient sound, sfx, and dialog bloops. Basically everything you'd expect a game of this sort to have is now actually there.
Saving: You can now save and load your game. Please note that saves created in one version of the game will not be compatable with others. (The game will also autosave after every conversation - it's a little finicky, so I'd recommend using it as a last resort.)
Menus: Pausing, save/load, settings, and quit menus are now available outside of conversations.
Skipping: Holding 'S' now fast-forwards through dialog.
Accessibility: Various screen and audio effects can be disabled via the in-game Settings menu. If you have any suggestions on how to make the game more accessible, let me know!
Credits: You can now see who's contributed what within the game itself. You, too, can now point at the screen and go "dat me".
ART FIXES:
Three new CGs (six, if you count the ones drawn - but not implemented - during Art Fight 2020).
The introduction is now slightly sillier.
Team Sugar's alley is now marginally cozier. Team Spice's cafe is now marginally messier.
Characters can now emote on the overworld.
The main menu no longer suffers from greybox syndrome.
Jitendra's eyebrows no longer randomly grow and shrink. This isn't a cadbury ad.
TEAM SUGAR:
It is now possible to determine what is wrong with the vending machine!
Never fear, Araña is here! She is totally a new character. Yup.
Team Sugar members can now pay a visit to what remains of the train station.
Added optional dialog trees for Twinx, Zoe, and Hans.
Ruthnaul now has slightly more to say.
TEAM SPICE:
Team Spice's story is now properly playable!
It is now possible to investigate the back room of the café.
Added a photo wall to Ria's cafe, with various character cameos and conversation starters.
Added optional dialog trees for Kusaru, Cornelius, Dash, Miles, and Jitendra.
Kusaru is more blunt.
Dash now has slightly less to say, but she's made a friend. And at the end of the day, isn't that what truly matters?
KNOWN ISSUES:
Audio and screen settings are currently tied to your save file, meaning they will reset every time you boot (or restart) the demo. Sorry about this - it's an engine thing I'm trying to find a workaround for.
The game will occasionally autosave in the middle of a room transition, which can very rarely softlock the game upon loading. If you do need to quit, I'd recommend saving the game manually first!
Skip function does not discriminate between previously-read and unread text.
Holding down any button during dialog will prevent the game from pausing at the end of a line.
...And there you have it! No matter what route you're on or what character you submitted, there should be at least a little more content for you to enjoy. And if there isn't? Well, uh, at least it'll look a little nicer!
Thank you all again for joining me in this crazy experiment. As always, let me know if you spot any bugs, would like something changed about your character, or have any feedback at all.
Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go catch up on my revenges.
