Hey people!
Yes, now it is FINALLY time… for a new devlog!
And oh boy, we prepared a lot for this. Before we start I wanted to apologize for the very late devlog, but I hope it is fine. Anyways let’s get started!
1. Team changes
I want to start out with the team changes that happened during this time. Unfortunately I must announce that we have lost three team members, them being MR.PETER, turtle and Funside. MR.PETER and turtle are a unknown case, I am guessing that they had no interest in the project anymore, while I have decided to kick Funside due to his inactivity. The good new though is that we have four new team members, them being Elodie (AKA Outta bounds), Hooded, HUH and C0st3r. Elodie is a new musician making the music team complete and Hooded is a new Artist, who will make new character designs, overworld designs and also help with some story elements. Probs again to Hooded for being very active.
C0st3r and HUH are a very important addition to our team, since they are our main spriters for now. It is not clear yet how much HUH can do, since he seems to be a busy guy and I wasn’t in contact with him. C0st3r will definitely help with the tilesets and objects though, which is already a huge relief.
2. Progress
We have A TON of progress to show off. I think it’s good to go category for category.
Firstly we have the Scripting, a very essential part of the game. We have expanded a bit on the main story, but what we have especially done is the Cave Script. The Gameplay of the Cave Demo is basically set, being about 90% done. Only smaller changes might be made and some smaller additions. Hooded is actually worked on the Room designs as of for now.
For the music part, we have made a lot of progress too. Evacuxte has remade his older “Once upon a time” replacement for the game, which turned out extremely well. Meyland (and evacuxte) made the main theme for the Royal Freedom, which will mostly play in the palace where the most important members are (and perhaps some cutscenes, not entirely sure about that though). Additionally Meyland did the main Ruins theme too. Caleb on the other hand has made the following soundtracks: “Main Menu”, “Determined Glow” (Game Over) and “Sighing in Silence” (Napstablook’s theme). Also, Raven made another banger (which will be uploaded as soon as L.J. is done with his based thumbnail), covering another boss theme for the Ruins. For some people who are curious why we make themes for the Ruins and not the Cave is simply because the Cave’s soundtracks are already finished. I will probably edit the playlist on SoundCloud aswell. The links for the soundtracks will be put at the end of the Devlog.
Now comes the coding part, which is yet lackluster. I have tested the new engine and am trying to get used to GameMakerStudio 1.4. The reason we use this version instead of GameMakerStudio 2 is simply because firstly it is cheaper, secondly it’s simpler (example the UI) and lastly all our coders are experienced with GameMakerStudio 1.4, which is why I am trying to get used to it. Once done, we will start coding the actual game.
At last… we have the art part and oh BOY do we have a lot. We made many new character designs them being Echo bat, Comostone, Migosp, Chara, Asriel, Asgore, Muffet, Lunatika Everstorm (New original character). Echo bat and Comostone are a newer version of old monsters. To be exact this is the third rework and most likely the last one!
Of course it wouldn’t make sense to just say which characters we drew without showing them… So here are some of them (NOTE: We purposefully don’t show all of them since some of them are supposed to be secret until they can be seen In-Game)
First we have… Echo Bat!
This art was made by Hooded and it’s a common monster in the Cave Demo. Echo bats can’t see with their eyes properly, but they can hear everything very precise and can image the surroundings in their mind. They are usually very aggressive due to their disadvantage of being pretty much blind. But cheese usually makes their hearts go soft and just like that you can befriend a Echo bat! These Echo Bats can be pretty dangerous though, as their screams can damage your ears. Those screams are so powerful that it can easily even destroy glass.
This art was also done by Hooded. Muffet works in a smaller bakery/café, where she sells different sweets, coffees, softdrinks/smoothies and pasteries. Muffet is sadly not very rich and really could need some money… So why not try out some of her nice foods and drinks?
And last but not least… MC Migo (Migosp)!
Hell yeah, Migosp is finally getting the attention he deserves. He is the most famous rapper in the entire underground and people from all across the underground know him. It is said that he never lost a single rap battle. Monsters occasionally meet up at the Ruins just to have a rap battle with him, but despite everything they lose. Migosp is always trying his best to make his right ear look like a note and gets mad when his “ style ” is disrupted.
As I said earlier, I will not tell every character yet, since many characters are still supposed to be a secret. They might or might not be shown at a later time though. These are the very recent works we have done and that we thought that we could share.
Now to end the progress part I wanted to summarize and say that it’s going very great lately. The team is more active than ever and I am happy that we got to this position. We will see what the future brings with us…
3. Future Plans
The Cave Demo is right now on the hit list. The coding didn’t start yet since I am still trying to get used to GMS1, but I am getting the hang of it. I will then change the dialogue engine up and use my own since I am more comfortable with that one plus I can do more with that. The SoundCloud playlist will get a huge change since it is not really up to date. I guess the theme “Flowering Madness” will get a huge remake too since it does not fit into the lore at all anymore. And yeah there isn’t much going for.
We are in a very good position and things are going splendid. Spriting is as of for now in the focuss, since we really need the sprites to implement them into the game. We have many many new members and it seems like it will only get more.
4. The End
