This week was mostly general improvement. I’m in the middle of redesigning the home / hub area for the third, and hopefully last, time. My goal is to make this area feel very empty, like nothing more than a navigable catalyst for the core content of the game, which are the memories you explore. Empty, but not uninteresting. I think some of the stuff we’re doing with the sound and colors makes it feel empty in a very cool way. I also added another prop for detail, and got two of the game’s mementos in place and working. You can collect them, and all the collection mechanics work perfectly. All that’s left here is some of the artwork.
One of the graphics artists has made a lot of progress on the game’s main enemy, which is exciting. We still don’t know if he’s going to actually be in the original demo release, but the answer is leaning on “yes”.
One of my favorite changes is the textbox indicator that appears now to let you know if you have any more pages of a document to read through. It’s awesome seeing a specific mechanic, like reading text, evolve. When I first started on Forgotten, I just had text come up on the screen. Then I added a backdrop. A fading animation. A page counter. Then I upgraded to Unity’s new GUI system, lost the backdrop, and compensated for it by adding shadows, outlines, and a higher contrast design. Modified the system so you can still move around while text is being displayed, made the fading smoother, and now we have a cool flashing dot to let you know that you need click the mouse to continue.
Lastly, I’ve started on some of the graphical flourishes that I’ve been holding off on until the game was almost ready for release. Namely, decals. I’ve created a set of decals for electronics, things like playback controls, numbers, marks for knobs, etc. I’ve also created some rust decals.
This week’s been okay, but the lack of direction and everybody’s busy schedule stopped it from being as good as last week. Next week I want to focus on getting some new player animations in, debugging the save system, and implementing a new in-game menu for quitting, changing settings, etc.
Don’t forget to like Forgotten on Facebook to support it and help grow it’s reach: https://www.facebook.com/ForgottenGamePage?ref=hl
And if you haven’t yet, play the old demo right here on GameJolt!
