Tales of Kulplex, Devlog #0 - The Journey Begins!

Hello there,

This post marks the start of my video game journey! After having spent several months prototyping and refining my general idea, I thought I would commit myself (insert lame git joke) to making a devlog alongside the development, so I can share and log the progress of my very first game as an indie:

What is “Tales of Kulplex”?

I have envisioned Tales of Kulplex (ToK) to be an explorative action game. In short, I’d call it an “ExplorAction” game.

Most of our story is set on Earth during the 14/15th century, spanning parts of Eurasia. At its center is the protagonist Yao, an old historian who, due to an unexpected event, illegally crosses a portal from his world to ours. Yao is no normal creature, in fact all of his kind have unique features. For one, they do not die easily but rather lose some of their body parts when injured.

Yao has lost his limbs while journeying through the portal and, with no other aim in mind, he sets out to find them again. Along the way, he meets new people and learns about his strange surroundings; he has the possibility to help others, fight dangerous creatures or simply explore every inch of this fantastic world.

The game has a strong connection to the actual geography, history and culture of the different locations, including the music, folklore and mythology.
As the development progresses, more local groups and institutions will be contacted in order to help with the crafting of faithful representations of each region.

Here are a couple of gifs to show the very first location in the game and some of the mechanics. We are still at the beginning, bear with us :D

Heads can let you see the world with different eyes:

Yao can help others who have also lost their limbs:

Does the idea interest you? Please feel free to follow this devlog, get in touch or perhaps even share it with someone who also might enjoy it!
I personally would love to craft the game together with the community to make this game the best it could be.

You can get in touch with us and stay up-to-date on:

The devlog will initially be released twice a month with a focus on the art in the first week and the programming in the third week of each month.

Thanks and see you soon!

Nesh

Some time ago, we posted a screenshot of the Mexico level. A curiosity about it is that, like some other scenarios of the game, it was inspired by a real landscape, The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla. It is one of the natural wonders of the country!
