The Art Behind Dark Queen

...is rooted in iconic animations, and timeless pieces of art that evoke strong atmospheres and unforgettable visuals.

In this post we’ll take a look into some of the biggest inspirations that are shaping the world of Dark Queen.

Visual Inspirations: Crafting a Darkly Enchanted World

From our very first concepts, we wanted Dark Queen to have a mysterious look, mixing folklore with dark fantasy. This is where we turned for visual inspiration:

80s Dark Fantasy Movies & Animations

The 80s were filled with iconic dark fantasy visuals, from the eerie worlds of The Dark Crystal to the magic atmosphere of Legend. We were captivated by the way these films handled magic and darkness and how every scene felt alive with unseen threats and hidden beauty. The sense of wonder mixed with menace in these films directly influenced how we’re approaching visual storytelling in Dark Queen.

Disney Animated Movies (especially Sleeping Beauty)

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is one of key inspirations in developing the mythical look of our environments. The grand, stylized approach of its forested settings and gothic architecture inspired the enchanted, haunting aspects of our game’s aesthetic.

Conan the Barbarian

The world of Conan the Barbarian and its heroes offers us an anchor in classic dark fantasy. The rawness of the characters, their primal strength, and the intense atmospheric environments inspire much of our character and world design. You’ll also find echoes of this influence in our protagonist, and in general feeling of raw power meeting a world filled with mystery and danger.

Čudesna Šuma (The Elm-Chanted Forest)

A Croatian animated classic, Čudesna Šuma is filled with mythical creatures and vibrant landscapes inspired by our own folklore. This film helped us envision a uniquely Croatian take on fantasy, one that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

Artists Who Shaped Our Vision

Besides these film and animation classics, these are specific artists who are making a strong influence in shaping the world of Dark Queen.

Frank Frazetta

Known for his iconic fantasy art, Frazetta’s characters are bold, raw, and larger-than-life, yet grounded in emotion and strength. His work is guiding us in making characters who feel visceral and powerful, embodying the strength and mystique of Dark Queen’s protagonists and enemies alike.

Eyvind Earle

Famed for his work on Sleeping Beauty, Earle’s environmental designs give us a basis for creating captivating and atmospheric backgrounds that feel simultaneously welcoming and foreboding. His influence helps us shape the look of Dark Queen’s world, filled with dramatic contrasts and detailed natural landscapes.

Blending Inspiration with Uniqueness

These inspirations are key ingredients in Dark Queen’s world, but we aim to blend them into something uniquely ours. With Croatian mythology and folklore at the core of our narrative, we’re taking inspiration from these iconic sources to shape a new, culturally enriched vision of dark fantasy. Dark Queen is a game that combines classic influences with a fresh setting, a tribute to legends that have haunted imaginations for centuries, while inviting players to step into a world they’ve never quite seen before.

That's all for this post. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes insights into the world of Dark Queen as we continue with our development.

Thank you for following our journey!

It’s a throwback to the '90s—gritty, analog, and unmistakably old-school.
