the kanto food chain

biology of the pokemon world. part 1

so this is a topic that I've wanted to talk about for awhile. I'll be going through all of the different regions and looking at how their food chain would work in a realistic setting. I have two ground rules, the first is that we're looking at the fully evolved pokemon only since the prevolves are considered their younger, more vulnerible forms. the second is that we won't be going over regional forms, those will be covered in the galar and alolan episodes. with that being said let's get to it

first we have the N/A category. all of these pokemon would not effect the ecosystem in a massive way for different reasons. first is the legendaries which don't need to eat to survive. next is the fossil pokemon which are extinct and therfore have no role in the ecosystem, and third is the category of pokemon that do not eat. in this category we have, porygon, electrode, magneton, weezing, starmie, and ditto none of these pokemon eat, electrode and magneton power themselves with electricity, porygon is just code, weezing eats gas from the air, starmie absorbs some kind of space energy, and ditto could potentially serve any niche in the ecosystem, although I doubt that it would actually need to gain sustainance through consumption if at all.

starting in the actual food chain we start with the plants, not just the actual grass and flowers but the pokemon that operate the same way. the pokemon in this category would be venasaur, vileplume, executor, and tangla. now there are other grass type pokemon to cover but they fill other niches which we'll get to later. these four gain their sustainance through photosynthsis. now sure these pokemon CAN eat foor like berries but they don't need to. the jury is still out on weather or not venasaur counts as a plant or an animal but I'm going to go with plant to be safe, since it doeas gain nutrients from the sunlight

next are the strict herbavores. in this category we have butterfree, nidoqueen, venomoth, poliwrath, rapidash, rhydon, tauros, kangeskahn, and lapras. to break them down even more rapidash and tauros would be the main herbavorus grazers, like the cows and horses of the real world. poliwrath would likley eat plain algae like real tadpoles (it has no visible mouth so it's my best bet) venomoth and butterfree eat nectar, lapras would be the ocean equivalent to tauros and rapidash, grazing on seagrass, however I would say that rhydon, kengeskahn, and nidoqueen (and maybe rapidash) would actually prey on other plant pokemon, they're the biggest and strongest of the bunch, nidoqueen is a poison type, which is strong against grass. they would likley prey on the plant pokemon, now that begs the question of weather or not they count as carnivores or herbavores which I'll let you decide

next up are the foragers, non aggressive omnivores, and filter feeders. pokemon that would eat plants, but also other litter and bugs as well. I name bugs because there is evidence that realistic insects do exist in the pokemon world, in the anime we see pidgeotto eating a realistic worm so I'm going to assume that regular insetcs exist. in this category we have raticate, raichu, sandslash, clefable, wigglytuff, parasect, dugtrio, golduck, alakazam, tentacruel, farfetch'd, muk, cloyster, hypno, marowak, hitmonlee, hitmonchan, chansey, seadra, seaking, mr mime, jynx, so this is a lot so let's break them down, raticate and raichu are the premire rodents of the kanto region, being based off of rats and mice repecively, these two are foragers that would likely eat anything, from plants, to insects, to other dead pokemon. next are the psychic types, the thing about having high intelligence is that it requires a lot of food to maintain, so jynx, hypno, and alakazam would likley have varied diets to support their massive brains. on the flipside we have the fighting types like the hitmons, while the psychics might take a page out of the large great apes like orangatans and eat mostly plants with some insects, the hitmons would largely eat meat to gain enough protien to sustain their massive strength, taking a page out of the book of humans and chimpanzees. next we have the filter feeders, cloyster, tentacruel and seadra these three would likley just eat plankton and alge in the water that flows by. next we have the strict bug eaters, dugtrio and sandslash, these two would likley eat worms that they dug up from the ground. muk eats literally anything in it's path. then we have the cutesey berry eaters that likley eat insects as well, wigglytuff, clefable, and chansey, we know that chansey likley eats its own eggs and the other two (especially clafable) live mostly in caves and would likely eat insects. parasect is a wried case as it is a mushroom that infects a pokemon, I actually think this mushroom could infect any bug pokemon but just chooses parasect, or it's a specific mushroom that target's this specific line (imagine a regional parasect that targets a different bug type pokemon). finally we have marowak, which probably is a scavenger, considering it uses bones as weapons, I mean was the skull already a dry bone when the cubone was born? perhaps cubone eat the bodies of their dead mothers after their born and the trauma is what causes them to cry. finally we have the standard omnivores, seaking, golduck, and farfetch'd, these guys likely eat a variety of things, from plants, to bugs, to whatever, carp and ducks are well known oppretunistic feeders and likley act that way in the wild

now we get into pokemon that actually eat other pokemon, theaggressive omnivores. in this category we have blastoise, nidoking, pirmape, machamp, golem, kingler, licitung, electabuzz, snorlax, onyx, golbat, and slobro. blastoise and kingler probably have some algae or aquatic plants in their diet, but they also likely feed on other, smaller fish pokemon, kingler is likley also a scavenger and would eat dead pokemon off of the seafloor, crabs are oppretunisitc feeders so it wouldn't suprise me. slobro is similar, we know that they eat both fish pokemon and berries as they use their tails for fishing in the kanto region, but are willing to switch to berries in galar, it all depends on which is more abundant. golem and onyx eat rocks, but also other rock pokemon like geodude. snorlax eats literally anything (in the animie it eats a lot of plants but it's dex entries say that it'll even eat muk). lickitung uses it's tounge to eat bug pokemon and berries alike,. golbat drinks blood, and the other four are probably similar to modern chimps and humans like the hitmons before, but these guys would likley take on much larger prey and make meat a larger staple in their diets and would likely go after larger quarry.

now we get into the strict carnivores. starting with the insect eaters (by insect in this case I mean bug pokemon). in this category we have beedrill, fearow, dordrio, and magmar. these four are all adaptaed to eat bug pokemon specifically, fearow and dodrio have pointed beaks to stab their prey, not unlike real birds. beedrill, even though it's called BEE drill, is actually a hornet, and hornets eat other insects, beedrill likley stabs its prey with those needle hands and eats them in a swarm, magmar is a fire type but it's not as preditory as the other ones, probably opting to take on other bug type pokemon for sustainance

next we have the smaller carnvores, the low tier carnivores, you know, the cheetas and coyotes of the pokemon world. in this category we have ninetails, dewgong, and the eeveelutions. they're all foxes (and dewgong) and likley hunt smaller, weaker pokemon for prey.

next we have the mid tier carnivores. ones that would pose a threat but not be on top, think leapords and mountain lions for real world examples. here we have pidgeot, arbok, persian, victreebell, pinsir, scyther, and dragonite. pidgeot is the premire bird of prey in the canto region, except it's way larger than real world raptors, likley making it quite a terrifying arial threat (hell they likley eat humans). arbok is a massive snake and this is where the largest real world snakes would reside. persain is a solo feline, like the afformentioned leapords and pumas, in fact their main inspiration is pumas, if they hunted in packs they'd be at the top no doubt. victreebell is a massive pitcher plant and would eat anything that would fall into it's pitcher, while real world pitcher plants eat mainly insects, they will eat anything that falls inside, victreebell is just that on steroids. pinsir and scyther are ina similar vein, originally designed to exclusively eat insects but because of their size they can tackle a lot more. and dragonite likley eats large fish pokemon that it plucks from the water, hell maybe it takes a page out of the raptor's playbook and grab blastoise from the water to drop them onto rocks and break open their shells

finally we've reached the top. the alphas, the feared, the top carnivores. here we have charizard, arcanine, gengar, and gyrados. each one rules a different biome, Cahrizard flies high in the sky, picking off birds, bugs, and anything on the ground it can take down. arcanine is the premire pack hunter of the land, taking a similar role to wolves, but bigger. gyrados terrorizes the water, amd gengar will eat the souls of whatever it want's capabe of eating the souls of the strongest pokemon if it wished, likley serving as the grim reaper, finishing off the souls of wounded pokemon so nature can take it's course. or getting into fights of life and death, where winning means it eats the loser's soul and losing means dying and maybe getting it's soul absorbed.

and that was the Kanto region. let me know what you think and weather I should do a part two for jhoto.
