The Weird Story of a Running Burger

So Let That Boy Cook is kind of an odd game.

It started out as a runner about waking up after a 21 Run to discover you had turned into a giant, sentient burger, and must escape the kitchen. It was also going to be 4 FPS because I had no idea how anything worked with this. It sucked.

After that I changed it to a platformer. It was at this point that I watched Vlambeer’s video on “”“”game feel”“”“” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U) and decided to make the game less “avoid the things” and more “kill the things” because kill the things is more interesting and empowering and yadda yadda.

So I did, but then the platforming felt out of place, because everything you wanted to hit was on the ground, so you never really wanted to jump unless you were avoiding things. Stupid! Get rid of that limitation by making it a more top down perspective.

Also at this point I realized that I needed to make re-entry really quick, and the stupid cutscene talking about that awesome 21 run was getting annoying, so I nixed that. I took a note from Jetpack Joyride and make the burger literally explode into the level to make it a little more awesome.

I did some tweaking on the score stuff so that the game never lasted longer than the song, and boom.

Some time ago, we posted a screenshot of the Mexico level. A curiosity about it is that, like some other scenarios of the game, it was inspired by a real landscape, The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla. It is one of the natural wonders of the country!

blender animation experimentation, getting the hang of things fast. arms, rig, & gun models by me ofc
