Untold Story bi-weekly Devlog
#1: The Main Character Rover Wilson and the Elements

Hey everyone! I want to start posting a dedicated post about some aspect of Untold Story every two weeks, starting today! I'll generally go over some part of the game, explain the gameplay aspects of it, and give some background information about the development front of it. For the first devlog, I figured I'd start with something simple: the main character!

This is Rover Wilson, the main character of Untold Story. He's an 18 year old from the town of Chilriva, currently studying how to use the Elements. Rover is a Skill Attacker, meaning his damage output is mainly going to come from using his Skills.

In my experiences, most protagonists of RPGs tend to focus more on being a physical attacker, or at least a mixed attacker, able to use attacks and magic. I decided to make the main character strictly used Skills (magic) to break away from that trend, and to help players quickly gauge the difference between Attack and Skills by making them use someone who has to use Skills to deal damage.

Rover's Class is Element Caster, and his Skill Type is Elements. Rover is the only party member who can use all of the Elements, meaning he can exploit any Elemental Weakness with ease. Even when the enemy doesn't have a natural weakness, he can create one with the interaction between Elements.

There isn't much to say about Rover's Skills, as they're pretty straightforward. Some party members have more complexities behind their Skills, but Rover is very easy to understand, which I feel helps to get players acquainted with the idea of Skills while still being useful throughout the entire game.

These are the 4 main Elements in Untold Story: Fire, Ice, Water, and Lightning. Something important to note is that Physical also counts as an Element. The majority of attacks and Skills in the game will count as Physical damage.

My favorite game is Final Fantasy X, and any fans of that game might see the similarities of the Elements. It's basically the same. The idea of two sets being strong against each other (i.e. Fire beats Ice, Ice beats Fire) is lifted straight from FFX. But I wanted to do more than that, which is how I ended up making statuses for each of the 4 Elements.

  • Fire causes Burn

  • Ice causes Frozen

  • Water causes Soak

  • Lightning causes Static

With how integral the Elements are to the story and to the gameplay, I didn't want to simply make them weaknesses to exploit.

That wraps up the first devlog for Untold Story! I hope you enjoyed and look forward to more, coming every two weeks!

An expansive desert has been nearly taken over completely by a lush forest. All that remains of the desert is a small patch of sand and the remnants of a ruined palace.

The party ventures to search the palace for the lost treasure...

I've finally found a way to change Victory Quotes mid game.

Now each character's victory quotes will correspond to the dungeon they're in, the other party members, plot events, and more!

Now you won't have to read the same text for 40 hours! Yay!

Hey everyone! I'm new here, found the place to host the demo to my RPG, Untold Story. My main goal was to create a very character driven story, while feeling reminiscent of classic turn-based RPGs. The title screen isn't great, but I'm more about story.

Inayah - Life After Gods is OUT NOW on Steam!

Marcus uses Battle Items for his Skills. Rather than SP, he uses special items to create tonics to debuff an enemy and bombs to deal Elemental damage to all enemies, making him very versatile.

Happy #WIPWednesday! Are you working on a game? Making some art? Practicing a song? Something else? Tell us in the comments!

I meant to do this a long time ago, but here's a another playable character: Tally. She can convert from Human Model to Cat Model, and even alter the battlefield with a variety of effects that all sides have to contend with. Pretty fun to use I think. :)

Hey all! After 5.5 years I've come up with a Demo for my turn-based RPG. If you like more classic RPGs with a heavy emphasis on story and characters, I think you might enjoy it. It even has a built-in Randomizer for extra fun. https://gamejolt.com/games/Untold_Demo/578183
