Hello everyone! In today's devlog, I want to talk about a very recent change that occurred during development. The topic for today is random encounters, or rather the the removal of them.
For anyone that doesn't know, random encounters in RPGs is when your party gets into a battle with enemies while simply walking on the map. It occurs randomly, usually based on a number of steps taken. It was more of an older method used to make battles easier to happen since they didn't need sprites on screen.
In the Demo Version of Untold Story (Found here: https://gamejolt.com/games/Untold_Demo/578183) uses random encounters. After getting some feedback from the demo though, I have decided to do anyway with them. As the red circle shows, Rover encountered a battle with no Monster visible.
As you can see, Monsters will now be visible in dungeons. If the lead player comes into contact with any of the Monsters, a battle will be initiated. This removes the randomness of battles, and allows the player to 1)know when they will get into an encounter, letting them prepare for it and 2)avoid any encounters if they choose not to fight at any given time.
As I mentioned before, Untold Story does not feature any Pre-emptive or Surprise attacks, and that still holds true with visible enemies. Simply touching the Monster will start the battle, and it makes no difference which direction the Monster was facing.
Once you defeat one of the Monsters on the map, it will no longer be there any longer. This means that there are a limited amount of static encounters the player can battle. However, there is not a limit about of battles.
Roxy's Field Skill will allow her to call forth a battle at any Green Torch in a dungeon. If every visible enemy has been defeated and the player still wishes to gain EXP, they can use this method to battle an unlimited amount of Monsters to continue to fight.
That is all for today's update! This is a new change I decided on recently, so I still have a ton of work to do to go about changing the encounters for every dungeon.
