Well we finally made it. Despite the misleading title, Boring Man has been greenlit!
I’d first like to thank every single one of you. Those who just played the game once, and those who have been regularly playing since v0.0.1. I’d like to say I love all of my players and I look to take care of you for as long as my body can.
Boring Man and Spasman Games is opening a whole new chapter, and I plan to release Boring Man, with Steamworks capabilities, in the very next update, version 1.1.0.
Some questions you might have I can answer:
What’s next?
As I said, I’d like to get the game onto Steam as soon as possible, since its already finished and released. No early access, as promised. 100% free? Well, that depends on your perspective.. read on..
Will the game remain free?
Of course. All weapons, all game modes, mutators and everything you see now will remain free forever. But..
BUT?!
But running the server list and website isn’t free. So I will be taking out the donation button on my site, and will be implementing it’s concept into Steam as DLC. Don’t worry, I am HEAVILY against pay to win and will do no such thing. This DLC will be very cheap ($3-$5).
What will the DLC contain?
First off, not new weapons. Any future weapon/gameplay updates will be free and available to everybody at an equal pace. The DLC will merely supply aesthetic perks to you in-game, like your name turning gold on the scoreboard, a secondary stickman color and many other things that are rattling up in my head right now. This DLC will merely exist to say “Hey, I like this game so I gave the dev money, so now I’m all shiney as a reward”. This DLC will not include any XP boosts or anything that can allow you to earn weapons faster then other players, as 1. Thats pay to win as heck, and 2. Players are bound to find a way to level up quickly anyways and make that kind of feature useless.
What about Hall of Fame donations?
I will be ceasing all Hall of Fame activity as of February 18th. For those that don’t know, the Hall of Fame is a menu selection in the credits, and its a list of people who have donated with their name and a picture of their choosing and a saying. After February 18th, these donators will be cemented in Boring Man forever and no one will be able to get into the Hall of Fame with a mere 5 dollars anymore, they will have to win tournaments or something or whatever. (Not confirming any regular tournaments here just yet..). If you donate 5 bucks or more to me now while you can, you will get into the Hall of Fame. I will email you myself for your information. (If I don’t, just ping me) I have no automated donation system, so apologies if it isn’t instant. Secondly, if you donate the 5 bucks or more before donation shutdown time, you will be given a two steam keys for the DLC on release. One for yourself and a friend :) Or two for your friends.. I don’t know. I don’t know your life.
Look for the donation button here: http://spasmangames.com/boringman/
What about GameJolt/Your site/etc?
GameJolt and any sites hosting the game will no longer see game updates, but will be there as “pre-steam” versions for those who may not feel comfortable moving on to Steam. The server list supports ALL versions of Boring Man, as I can relate when it comes to preferring older versions of a game. I will still post change logs and articles there, but you will be directed to Steam to download. All things Boring Man will be migrated to the Steam client.
How will the workshop function?
As of now, Boring Man will only support custom maps, custom tile sets and backgrounds as “modifications”. If I were to gut out the graphics and weapons systems (not really promising anything), then perhaps graphics/weapons mods will be possible. But custom maps/tiles will be very easy to implement into the workshop.
I am hearing whispers of a save wipe in the next update..
Yep. In order to at least TRY To stop level/experience hacking/boosting and look semi-professional, I have made some changes to the XP system and have implemented a whitelist map system, like Killing Floor. I am wiping the saves as the structure of the save profiles have changed and I just want to whack people who have clearly broken their save files. If you need someone to blame for this, blame the next guy you see who is over level 10,000.
White list?
For those that don’t know, maps that aren’t “white listed” do not allow players to earn experience points. To get your custom map white listed, you must send the map to me for approval. The system is already done and ready for the next update. I will accept pretty much 99% maps, the only two rules I have is it can’t be a grinding map and the bots must have decent waypointing available to where they can defend themselves.
You’re gonna approve them all yourself?!
Well.. yes.. I don’t get that many map submissions to be honest (I wish I did!). If custom maps do happen to blow up, perhaps if some of you are willing, you can volunteer to help approve maps and we can start a email mailing list/group or something.
What else is in the next update?
For being such good sports, I’d like to reveal that there are 10 NEW WEAPONS in version 1.1.0. I will hopefully also add a bunch of new maps and possibly a new game mode if it works out okay.
WHEN? DATE?
I dunno yet.. sometime in March or Late Feb perhaps.
Well that’s all the possible questions I can think of. I’m sure some of you may have other questions, so if you do feel free to comment on here or email me at [email protected]
Thank you all, seriously. This is a major life goal that I have accomplished and has reignited my love for my hobby. I’m excited and scared at the same time. This was a major thing to cross off my bucket list before I die from shooting my grapple hook into spikes.
