Undertale Template X (by Charles03)

Well, that was embarrassing.

Greetings!

It's been a long time since I posted here. The main reason that I returned was mainly so I could re-ignite my desire for Toby Fox's works.

I know, most of you have probably not tuned in by now. Understandably so, in fact since I stopped working on my "fangame" and "engine". Still, I think it's worth a shot to reach out once more...

I still remember when I was merely a poor old, somewhat socially-inept fan of UNDERTALE, and felt I could contribute doing what I wanted to do best: programming.

In a way, the idea of making an UNDERTALE fangame made me learn complex how to design complicated logic systems better. I mean, the old battle system for my previous iteration of the template took me months to finally put it into execution.

Driven by my passion in designing the previous "fangame" (or rather, an admittedly poor attempt at it... I mean, it was never even realized after all), I also had to learn how assets work together to form a theoretically properly-functioning game.

Cue 2025.

Saw the DELTARUNE Switch 2 trailer, and I learn that it's coming soon, at the 5th of June this year... so I felt I had to make the most of it. I browsed many posts, watched many theory videos... and stumbled upon my old work.

While I considered going back to GameMaker, I remembered that I was really dismayed about their change to subscription-only payments, and that I vowed to stop using the software.

But lo and behold, I was pleasantly surprised when they returned to providing a free version for non-commercial games back in 2023.

I decided... maybe I could do something about it, rather than just reminisce on joyous times long gone.

I started re-learning GameMaker (apparently it's only called that now, even though it still largely resembles GMS2), and got used to its new features, its unfortunately downgraded image editor, and its rather strangely-designed "Workspaces".

...so, here you go.

New "engine"... or more fittingly in my opinion, new game template, I guess.

Sadly, the battle system has not been re-implemented yet. It will be at least many weeks before I get back to that point, from scratch.

Still, it was nice to get back into doing something I really liked.

Enjoy the new template, folks! And as always...

Have a great day, everyone!
We'll need it more now than ever before.

Some time ago, we posted a screenshot of the Mexico level. A curiosity about it is that, like some other scenarios of the game, it was inspired by a real landscape, The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla. It is one of the natural wonders of the country!

Hey you, rookie! Yes, I am talking to you!! Come over here? Relax! Just stick to me and everything will be fine. By the way, my name is James Varhuher, but you can call me Big J. I will bring you up to speed.
