What Could Have Been

As is mentioned in the description, this game was finished in just 24 hours rather than the given 48 hours. I had my reasons for cutting it short, and I did go the full 24 hours without any sleep or >30 minute break, knowing that I would be hard pressed to finish. Obviously, this meant cutting some features and, sadly, not managing to balance it properly. So, I’ll address my initial idea here.

The original plan was similar to what the game ended up as. You design your systems in a short build phase, then have to last for 10 seconds against meteors falling. This is like in the game, but in the game I removed the 10 second limit because it ended up feeling really forced when the round ended suddenly.

What I wanted to add, though, was more modules. Specifically, I wanted modules that allowed you to angle your shots so that they travelled horizontally, and modules that delayed the bullets that came into it, but shot out two bullets afterwards, at various angles. The reason I planned this was so you could basically have a really complex system where the bullets remain in play. The counterpart to this would have been extended rounds later on, where you don’t get to build between waves for a while.

Sadly, I was limited by my own hand. I cut some corners while creating the first modules. Rather than make a generic ‘object’ handling system, I hard-coded all the types of modules. I make a note of it while working with the system later; I really shouldn’t have cut corners. It would have taken a bit more time at the start, but would have let me add any number of modules.

As for cosmetic things I disliked and would have changed in the game, explosions. I have two update methods, update and ten_update, the latter of which runs every few update cycles. My animations change in that longer update cycle, and thus explosions end up being really slow. I would have changed it, but I was running out of both time and energy.

Overall, I am pleased with the result, I just wish I had had a bit more time. I might one day extend this into a real project, maybe a mobile game, but probably not very soon. I’ve had my share of missile defence for now.
