When the channel first started in 1977, it was called this due to the main TV series broadcasted in the channel having the same name. The channel was renamed to Nickelodeon in 1979 and became ad-free (very funny, it has ads now) until 1984, getting ads again (along with the famous "Nick Nick Nick" jingle). Nick was sold to Viacom (original owner being Warner Communications) in 1986.
What was Nickelodeon's original name?
EDIT: The answer is Pinwheel.
