Since the advent of Game Maker Studio, the original version by Mark Overmars is a memory. Many features such as the 3D system have been abolished or limited in scope.
As far as games go, it's another casual browse. You want to scroll ahead, but something catches your attention. The game looks simple on the surface, but the style is different.
One might say: "What makes this game so special?" "I've played lots of games with a similar theme." "Is the one quid worth my time?"
Dovelight Crusaders 6 doesn't use GM Studio, it's Game Maker 8.1. Yes, I still use the legacy version. I originally paid $20 for version 8.0, and 8.1 came as an upgrade before the switch to GM Studio.
This particular game is special because I found a way to use video as a background! Graphical-Image Format (GIF) allows you to compress an MP4 as an animation. The best resolution is 160 X 120 pixels (to save memory), and the drawing function can scale it to the size you want.
Dovelights 6 is primarily a shooter, using the collect-a-thon approach from platform games. The goal is to knock out monsters that come your way, collecting treasure in the process.
It's not a blast frenzy, because there are items to save for points. Instead, it gives the shooter genre a more comical twist with emphasis on scenery.
The player will explore 200 islands, and the replay value comes from the random generation of challenges and additional characters to find.
As a result, the player will experience a diverse world with captivating characters. To top it off, the player can learn the language of this world -- an educational element that shooter games don't have.
In conclusion, the level of immersion will make the toughest critics raise an eyebrow. They will also appreciate the intricate approach to the genre, and, even if they don't like the game, $1 is virtually a sweet steal (if I do say so myself).
You don't have to take my word for it. Try it. Enjoy it.
