TALE of the SALESMAN

Why Tale of the Salesman would not be like any other UT/DR fangame.

COMEDY VS. TRAGEDY

All of you propably know by now that Undertale and Delatarune are games that are more focused on the realism of RPG violence. They're both games that can give you different endings depending on if you decided to kill everybody or spare everybody.

Day of the Tentacle however is a game where you can literally blow up George Washington's teeth with an exploding cigar, push an old nurse down the stairs and block the chimney while there's a lit fir in the fireplace just to make everyone jump out the window so you can get a single item.

In day of the Tentacle, there's literally a rule in the game "You can't punish the player for doing something funny" which normally involves slapstick, being a bit of an ass and ruining some people's lives. In Deltarune however, you can't really do that. Although in Undertale, there is a bit of slapstick with papyrus at times, especially at the invisiblity maze bit which is actually unintintional for both the player and papyrus.

I was thinking you can still be a bit of an ass and have slapstick but without any intentional harm.

BATTLE SYSTEM

The whole point of a battle system in Undertale and Delatrune is the choice between being a pacifist or... genocidist...? And another reason is the protagonists. The reason it works for Frisk and Kris is because they're designed to be grey rocks of characters so you can do whatever you want with them.

Bernard however, he can push an old lady down the stairs and burst a balloon clown but I just can't imagine Bernard actually doing genocide... in a way. Bernard is a geek stereotype with the bravery of a kitten who can't go five minutes away from her mother (aww). He's pretty much the opposite of what you'd expect as a protagonist for a game like Deltarune.

Okay, I'll admit there are some jokes of Bernard using Laverne's scalpel on the fat guy in the honeymoon suite and the cigar salesman but honestly, that's just not how I like to see Bernard in my opinion, besides, they're jokes. He never actually kills any of them, in fact if you try to use the scalpel on the cigar salesman, he grins for one second but then puts the scalpel away, sighs and says how wrong that is (though the other times, Bernard puts it away when the cigar salesman faces him).

WHAT'S SO FUNNY?

One more thing: Day of the tentacle is a game that isn't taken as seriously as Undertale or Deltarune (or in some cases, not taken seriously at all) but the reason why I want to cross it with Deltarune chapter 2 is because there are some moments and characters which aren't taken seriously either.

Most fangame developers often add in way too much anime-styled drama and forced sans fights (I don't watch anime, I'm more of a looney tunes and Tom and Jerry fan, Alphys would probably hate me). Especially cloning of other fangames with stolen ideas (thank you, @jevilhumor ). Don't get me wrong, there are good fangames like Dreemurr reborn that I'm not too keen on but they still are really good, I'll have to admit. If you're a fangame developer that actually puts effort in 'em, good for you :-)

This fangame however will be more art focused because there is no specific art srtle for UT or DR other than the common pixel art style, and most hand-drawn fan artists either go with Cal-arts, Anime or Disney. The art in TofS will actually be based off Peter Chan, Larry Ahern and the top-shelf artists Chuck Jones and Maurice Noble (famous for the direction and backgrounds in the 1950s Looney Tunes cartoons, Like "what's opera doc?" for example).

The game will be in pixel art but the backgrounds and some of the animations will actually be hand-drawn then converted to pixel art afterwards so it gives the feel that you're playing a cartoon.

And let's talk about Queen. The expectation of Queen back in 2018 to 2020 was that she had muted colours, acted mean and is taken seriously while the canon Queen is an oddball, class-clown-type-person with a battery acid fixation. It's that kind expectation that shows that the fans focus more on the seriousness of the knight, the fountains and the souls other than the comedy, It makes sense though ever since most people are focused on the unanswered questions and theories everywhere... but I like to try something different.

And the game will have some Looney Tunes/Tom and Jerry type humour at times but will be made in a way to fit in with the Deltarune world and not feel forced, annoying or overused.

Okay, I think I'm done. God.
