Hello there.
Tim DN, as usual, is in touch, and here are the theses of our today's and monthly post:
Where I was for this time?
DT progress
(script, sprites, music)
;Personal life of developers
(admission, thoughts about the future)
.
Despite the small amount of material on the game, there’s still something to talk about, so let's get started.
✨ Where I was?
There were several reasons for my absence this time. The first and biggest reason is my week-long trip out of town to get some air and "clear my mind". As you can imagine, this departure made it impossible to continue working on games, which marked a small creative break, but this didn’t prevent me from returning to drawing in a sketchbook (which I hadn’t done for a long time) and periodically taking notes with ideas in phone pad for different projects. After returning, I had another short break, after which I started intensive preparation for study and further life, but we'll talk more about this point later. The second reason is the lack of material for publication. I think there’s no need to explain this reason. Anyway, there are some sketches! 😅
✨ Progress in the script!
The good news: the first scene (our ill-fated night train, into which the main character falls) is finally scheduled! However, not all the paths of passage were covered, but I decided that first I’d make an initial and relatively holistic frame of the plot, which over time will become overgrown with details and different scenarios. And yes, I’m seriously aiming to make more variety in the plot and try to take into account all possible options for the player's actions with the character reactions attached to them, because I like to paint these very options and plus I started watching the "History of the Fallout Series", so the source of my inspiration can be understood. Of course, the first time it won’t be possible to take everything into account, so we’ll add new storylines and dialogues with the release of updates, when people notice various logical mistakes in the sequence of actions in previous episodes.
In general, as for the next scene, after the Doctor leaves the train, in which she encounters the first enemy, she enters the night forest, in the depths of which there is a settlement of tree-like creatures, Trees of Cheem, living on planet of the same name (Cheem). I’ll tell you more about them and their home when a piece of the plot with this place and the sprites of the characters and the planet will be ready, but the main thing is not to forget about I promised you this. In the meantime, I continue to move on the plot, there’s still a lot of work to do.
✨ Spriting.
There’s not much to tell here, except that I did the first animation of Doctor’s speech performed by Jodie Wittaker. It's a little uncommon to work with such large sprites, but I think I'll get used to it over time. The animation itself, in my opinion, needs to be improved, therefore, in the course of mastering the animation of the mouth I’ll adjust this animation too, but don’t expect a complete redraw of the sprite in terms of appearance!
✨ The first track is in development.
Most likely I didn't tell you, but we found a musician for our game. Name’s Arseny, his nickname’s Lavender. Now he’s working on the reconstruction of the main theme of the series, transferring it to the UnderTale setting. The difficulty of this task lies in the fact that I want to achieve the most similar sound to the original theme of "Doctor Who" (all rustles, sound, instruments, etc.), but the notes should be replaced with the notes of "His theme", which’s will be the complexity of the job. Anyway, I believe in Arseny's strength, so I’m partially calm about the result.
HOWEVER, this doesn’t mean that the search for a musician is over. We’ll also be looking for people who’re able to write orchestral covers and who love this genre, since there’re quite a lot of music planned in the game, and it’ll not be productive to load Arseny alone with them. So the search will be resumed when I can find free time for this.
✨ Ksan went to university!
Another not unimportant news of this month is Ksan's admission to the university. In fact, it was a rather dreary process in terms of choosing a place and submitting documents, but in the end 3 possible options for admission was found and of these three he entered a village close to his city. I don’t know if they’ll teach well there, but Ksan already likes this place for its surrounding mountains and has got a good neighbor, so I hope he’ll be good there. And, of course, he entered on a budget basis, which's good news :з
As for working on games, we’ll need to discuss everything thoroughly, because he’s unlikely to be able to find enough time now to develop our fan games (DoctorTale and SwapFell), to help other people and to gradually create originals. Therefore, we’ll need to prioritize and choose what won’t interfere with our school/university life. However, it may be easy for him to find time for all this, I don't know.
✨ My future...
I never thought that one day I would raise this topic in my posts, but since there is an opportunity to speak out, why not do it. I hope you don't mind thinking a little about the "future" and my business here. If you do not like this, like one friend of mine, then wind on. Thanks to the rest if they read it.
In general, I will be extremely brief. On August 24, and then on August 26, I had a serious conversation about what I was doing. After that, I reconsidered my whole situation with pixel art, the desire to learn, the problem of growing up and defining my future business. I decided that it was time for me to move on, and not just sit in the corner day after day, redrawing the same sprites and changing the DT plot, but already specifically form my goal and start moving towards it. I started reading business and other developmental literature, making plans for each day and weighing everything I am doing now. Now I am in the process of taking the first step towards achieving my dream - creating my own game studio, in which I will make games with a group of trusted people according to my and possibly other people's scenarios, focusing on history, variability and graphics. To do this, I'm going to start knocking on all studios working with pixel art, and write to all people who need an artist and animator in one person, and if I'm lucky, I'll try to write something for them. To present my work, I started Instagram, in which I post posts with animations and some drawings at variable intervals. Most likely, you will also need to get ArtStation, since this platform is the main place for collecting drawings for portfolios, but for now I use Instagram for this purpose.
As you can see, I am starting to move to the next stage of growing up. It will not be easy, you will need to figure out many things, such as keeping track of funds, distributing the budget, improving English, keeping a little childish in myself, but I am ready to delve into all this in order to achieve my goal. I hope I can handle it all, but we'll see.
Well, it's done. The next post will most likely be on the anniversary of UnderTale and DoctorTAle, September 15-16. There will be a congratulatory text and some drawing about one of these games. With luck, there will also be news from development. In the meantime, good luck to everyone, have a good start to the school year and see you! ✨
