It first started with manmade horrors like pig human hybrid organs to the scientists trying to figure out how to play god with manufactured creatures until they can make something that can live independently from control groups.
Mankind made a horrible mistake creating these monsters greater than them because anything greater than something must replace it.
There were polar bears on 2 legs brutally murdering whole families in their already cold homes out of the sheer desperation of an ice age, mankind had finally angered the creator, and their artificial bastard children populated the rest of the world repeating historical atrocities that they couldn't foresee because there was no human history to document. Just relics from a modern time bygone of morals, and the last fossils of the human race that are put in raccoon run museums where they'd be displayed next to shiny police badges and other relics from human existence. Once the ice age and extinction event by genocide of mankind by human convergent evolution attacking it's creator ended, all these chimerized living things colonized the infrastructure of mankind, making the society of the new century, 3000 who have no food but their own spliced kind chopped up into pieces. Bottlenecked by the human race to cannibalize themselves into extinction just like mankind built themselves into obsolescence.
A sad existence. But does it really have to be this way? That's what Betsey Abernathy's goal is. To change this doomed world when she realizes there's blood in the water and the elephants in presidential seats aren't telling the truth about where food is sourced.
Due to the most threatening forces being avians, lepidoptera, and birds of prey with guns taking out game and eating them in the ice age, flying creatures, moths, birds, bats, are the new persecuted class in a world where they reigned supreme. So nothing changed, but the flying creatures are the new bottom of the hierarchy to be killed off because they can fly around with guns like attack planes.
