[ I just made a post on my music blog, commenting about the songs I did for WWW, here’s a sample of it]
As you may know, I’m programming a side project called WWW; it’s a game made to be a clone of VVVVVV. It centers around the idea of being ultra retro and having a very small resolution.
I’m also making all the art and music the game.
Working on those three different areas at the same time is challenging. At least the game’s retro and such.
For now it has two background songs: one for the main menu (kindly named Waiting) and another for the first level (Rainy Sky).
As usual, I composed them on Guitar Pro 5, exported to .midi and fed them to GXSCC, that made the chiptune-ish effect. Finally, converted the .wav output to .ogg and .mp3 with the sox command-line program.
Waiting (the main menu song)
To be honest, it’s draft was made a few months ago. I mean, the main riff was a random idea I had while strumming power-chords on my guitar. The idea is very simple and I think it fits well with a waiting situation – loading screens, menus, etc.
All I had to do to finish it was making a bass melody and – done! Of course, it has a very small time loop (40 seconds wear you out really fast) but since people don’t spend that much time on menus, it went out fairly fine.
At first I wanted to make something like VVVVVV’s main menu song (called Presenting VVVVVV). It’s simple yet ear-catching and fits with the other game songs. But, of course, I couldn’t even get near SoulEye’s great work.

Rainy Sky (first level song)
This one took quite some time to make. It came out as an experiment of making random guitar solos on Guitar Pro. I like to do this kind of thing; it’s fun to click on the scales and try to be creative. I tend to copy random bits of notes from solos that randomly pop on my mind.
All I need is a guitar base, and on this case the basic chords were also ready. I had this file named smooth-solo that I made, like, 3 years ago. It consisted of the first parts of this song, spanning 20 to 30 seconds.
I composed it for about 2 days, a few minutes here and there. Overall, it doesn’t seem very consistent to me, and I think it’s because I didn’t made it in one sit. After a while I was getting impatient. I wanted to release the first version of WWW as soon as possible, so when the music loop got to 1 minute I packaged it and called it done. The name’s Rainy Sky simply because it was raining while I was composing this solo. :)
