What do you think?

Do you adapt your own children book to a video game? This is really cool, man!

The Story

The Adventures of the Salamander follows the struggles of Slippy the Salamander, as he seeks to free Salamander Village from the mean-spirited lizards who have invaded and taken over the bakery.

The game follows the original books. loosely, focusing on Slippy's first adventure in which he must escape from Salamander Village to find help.

Level Art

The artwork is all hand drawn and animated, making each level a unique piece of art. Here is an example of the first level:

Gameplay

The game forces the player to find unique solutions to the problems it presents. It is not about fighting or beating up lizards. Rather, it is about using the available tools and environment to help get past obstacles.

The game starts with very simple problems and solutions, but it builds up complexity with each new item, and requires the player to think more critically in later levels.

Original Books

The Adventures of the Salamander is a series of children's books written and illustrated by Michael Klaus Schmidt. As an artist and game developer, Schmidt has augmented his stories with this unique take on the platform genre.

I've been working on updating more levels recently. Progress is slow, but should be more steady from now on ... here is the current one I am working on. You can see that I took the old, tile based level, and I am just drawing over it.
